I don't like the idea of weapons having a set % on crits. First of all, we'd have to know what the percentage already is, and if it's the same for each weapon. Judging from the Soldier's Bazooka, I'd say it's less than 25% chance, but more than 5%.
I think the backburner should have a different characteristic. It gets full crits from behind, no crits otherwise, but they only burn for 60% of the original burn time. This encourages you to kill them or come close to it the first time around, and keep going, don't double back.
Another idea: maybe it should overheat. This would discourage you from running around spamming it, and instead using controlled bursts coupled with the back crits. If you use the smoke screen while it's hot, it won't increase the heat, but it won't let it cool down either. It would also be good if they're in water it supercools it, making pyro's leave their element and enter a weak area to cool down their weapon.
On a side note, Natascha is unbalanced when compared to the minigun. I think it needs an ammo buff, maybe 300.
I think that the overheat is too complicated for this game in general. You can't force people into playing strategiclly, it isn't as easy as some people think it is ( and i know that this wasn't what you were trying to say). If someone is killed because they chose to run out in the middle of the map flamethrower a blazing, and if they choose not to learn from this experience and die a similar death multiple times then thats their fault. Also I personally would prefer the smokescreen over the all critical hits from behind, it is a more efficient tool for both ambushing and escaping. Actually here is thought:
Flamethrower Lv.1- air burst
BackBurner Lv.10- 100% critical hits from behind
New Flamethrower Lv.?- smokescreen
They could add a third primary weapon to all of the classes after they finish the current updates and give the smokescreen to the Pyros new flamethrower. Then they can keep the current BackBurner ability and then give the players the choice between the air burst, all criticals, and smokescreen. Valve if you read these posts then put into cosideration what we have said.
About your other post, I'd understand if you rarely play the PC version so you don't know what's what. I'd say the biggest advantage the PC has over the 360 (or any shooter on a console) is that we get updates. The backburner works very well now.
Does anyone even play medic on xbox live?
i know what you mean about forcing people to play strategically, but look at halo. The plasma weapons overheat.
I play with my friend, and he's the usual "i'm gonna spam the fire button until he's dead, especially if i'm dual wielding". I however alternate between my left and right weapon, and fire in bursts.
If people don't consider the overheat and continue to spam fire, that's fine. I didn't mean for it to be too drastic, I was modelling it after plasma weapons in Halo.
But it will at least show people that there is a better way to play pyro. Maybe if they refuse to learn, they'll end up giving up on the class and finding another that suits their playing style, like Heavy for instance.
I would prefer the behind crits over the smoke. I'm already good enough at sneaking around in 2fort that I wouldn't really need any other cover. I really rely on killing them quickly with crits, or else I end up with a lot of people with low health looking to kick my ass.
I was just hoping they'd give the backburner a smoke screen, and buff the airblast so it's less ammo. I'd say that would make them even.
And don't put it past Valve, they take a lot from the community.
Valve is by far my favorite videogame company. They actually care about the customer.
