Various Game Mode Ideas
just a few ideas that might not be as 'epic' as ctf, but could be a refreshing break
Basic Team Deathmatch - team with most kills at the end of the combat phase wins. simple, but i wonder how different bases might be when protecting a flag is no longer the objective. maybe a lot of camping, but this could be overcome by having smaller maps with no solid walls to hide behind. so any protection they build can be destroyed eventually.
Delivery - there are already some maps like this, where one team starts out carrying a flag and they have to bring it to a capture point which the other team defends. my variation on this would be to have both teams trying to bring their flag to a neutral capture point. the capture point would be in some place that is unreachable without the help of blocks. the teams would have to build a path to get there and as soon as they manage to get their flag to the capture point, every block within a certain radius of the capture point immediately unfreezes or vanishes. that's so you can't just keep whoring your ramp to the cp.
Jailbreak - i'm sure many have played this variation of dodgeball as a kid (or adult?). each game would be separated into 10 rounds. during a round, if you are killed, you don't respawn, but are placed in a 'jail' area. if all of your team mates are in 'jail' the other team wins that round and everyone respawns for the next round. however in the middle of the map, in a hard to get to area (similar to the cp for the delivery mode) there is a button which will allow all of your team mates in jail to respawn. downside would be if a team has one player left and they decide to camp. for this reason there would be a time limit on each round as well. if time runs out, then the team with the fewest in jail wins.
Pacifist CTF - odd idea, but here goes. plays like regular sourceforts, except unfreezing enemy blocks is disabled, so the only way to break through is by shooting the blocks or trick jumping. however this is a pacifist version, so causing damage to any enemy player will cause YOU to die. this means if you want to stop someone from shooting at your wall, you merely have to jump in the line of fire. since engineers can heal faster than a single person can damage a block, teams would have to work together to bring down a block, but since they'd be concentrating on one block, it'd be easy for someone to jump in front to protect it.
Basketball - this comes from something i used to do on empty servers because i thought it was kind of fun. i would build ramps, grab the enemy flag, go on top of the ramp, and drop the flag, so it would roll down the ramp. (easily amused, i know). but to make it actually interesting, this mode would pit 2 teams against each other to construct a ramp they can use to drop their flag onto a 'goal' you would have the 'start' area where your ramp begins. if you are carrying the flag and move outside the 'start' area, then you die. you can only exit the start area if you aren't carrying the flag. the first team to successfully score a goal wins. maybe for fun, everyone would get put into a flag spectator mode for a replay of their successful goal.
Sledding - not a very competitive mode, just for fun. kind of like surf maps on cs. basically you have a giant ski-jump type map. you build a sled as simple or complex as you want. you hop on the sled, press a button, and the whole object goes sledding (or tumbling mercilessly) down the hill. not sure if this kind of thing is possible, though. oh well, maybe in another mod.
