Default Shield?

Instead of players having X amount of health and X amount of armor, why not make it so that instead of armor players have "shields."

These shields can take a certain amount of damage before they're unusable again. This would make it so that players couldn't just blindly shoot at their enemies, but use it to their advantage. The shield would have between 50-100 health (depending on the class) and would shatter (but cause no damage to the player) after the damage limit is reached.

The shield would make the player unable to use any of his/her weapons and would only cover the player and no one else on the team. Players could still attack a player with a shield on from behind

You might be asking...why would this be necessary at all??

Well here's some reasons:
1) Let's say on the other team there is an annoying rocket spammer (which I'm hoping some severe damage dropoff in 194 and especially 200 will be in place, but if it doesn't happen) and your engineer just needs 5 seconds to grav nade him, but theres a block that will shatter if one more rocket hits it. A soldier could jump in front of the block and activate his shield and while his shield is destroyed, the rocket spammer is dead and the engineer healing the block has extra time to get the blocks health up again and hopefully save the block.

2) If you're in a midfield battle with another soldier, instead of who has the better aim, there will be a new dimension added as to who can make the other soldier waste more ammo, so one of them can finish the other off as he reloads.

3) This would serve as an excellent protector against nade spam when getting out of spawn.

Opinions?

Not sure if you played CS before the switch to steam and 1.6. During the move from 1.5 to 1.6 the shield was implemented. As I'm sure your aware, it works just like the shield you mention above (except for the damage thing.)

The shield was almost immediately renamed the "noob shield" and banned from most servers. Its even banned from CAL. There was a huge outcry against the shield. Such a large dislike, from such a huge community as Counter Strike, must pull some weight in the argument here. (I am aware the games are different, but the item is more or less the same.)

As far as your reasons. The first one is a moot point because of the rocketeer fix that is in 1.9.4. If rocketspam is no longer an issue, than that point is irrelevant. As for number 2, as a soldier I can say that I feel I would never use a shield in that situation. I don't think it would really give me a tactical advantage. point three is fair, but its more or less like implementin a 10 second invulnerability when your spawned, which is not a great idea.

All of that aside, it has been stated many times that 1.9.4 is almost done and is a bugfix. The gameplay in 2.0 is so vastly different that none of these reasons probably apply to that game. (Or they might, but who knows... right?)

The shield exploits were the greatest. Too bad they patched them ages ago. That was loads of fun.

I fire my precious rocket at a sniper, his shield breaks, I get to reload, and he gets to shoot without taking 1 damage at all.
