How we view blocks
(as you may have guessed) I've been thinking a fair bit about the role blocks play in this game. The new big thing is the concepts of blocks that do cool things, and I actually really like that idea.
(in this thread I'll reference many of the ideas ive already presented in an attempt to show how I came up with them, and why I think they'd be good to consider. you could likely just as easily delete all the other threads ive made, as I'll be going over most of them in here. Also, please don't take this as anything more than an introduction of concept. Everything in here is something for you to consider, and not much more than that)
However, I'd like to take that one step further. Why not get remove the concept of "blocks" and replace it with the broader concept of "entities." Given that the devs have already introduced the concept of blocks doing more than just be in the way, this would be more of a mindset change than anything, but I think even just a change in name would make things easier to understand.
"entities" would include anything a player can build. As they are a staple of this game, entities would include blocks, but they would also include things like ammo dispensers, healers, jump pads, that shield thing I mentioned before, and whatever else we come up with (going back to the "blocks" i introduced in the other thread).
I introduced those things as blocks, but I don't think the term blocks really fits, since they aren't meant to "block" things. As I said, this is pretty much just a mindset change, but I think it's an important change if you want to come up with "blocks" that are more than just blocks.
Alternatively, that is not your intent, in which case such a mindset transition would not be necessary. You've only presented one block so far, which was simply a stronger block, so it really doesn't say where you actually intend to go with the concept. That being the case, can a dev give a bit more insight into the matter?
