I blame this on Stieffers.
Then again, it might just be you PSU.
^ Don't mind that, old jokes that needs to be said every time a problem comes up.

Well, did a bit of googling on the subject, and it apparently this bug happened to someone playing HL2:Wars, due to having the wrong patch.
Also, some people have the problem on CS:S, here's some solutions:

Had the same prob! (twice, once with CS and I've now just had it with CS Source) Fixed it both times by swapping ram into oppposite slots (plus gave the heat sink on CPU a good clean and added some new paste, but I dont think its a over heating problem). Strange I know but it worked!
Give it a go!

On large open areas my system would crash to desktop, with same memory error messages. Adjust your memory timimgs to less aggressive might fix problem. In my case I changed memory timings from 2-2-2-5 to 2-3-3-5 and bump the DDR voltage from 2.7 to 2.8.
Haven't had crash since

OK CHILL GUYS I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR THE MEMORY REFERENCE PROBLEM. ITS VERY SIMPLE , I DIDNT THINK IT WILL WORK BUT I WAS AMAZED TO SEE IT DID. I ALMOST THREW MY HL CDS IN THE DUSTBIN...OK OK THE SOLUTION... CLICK PROPERTIES OF THE ICON U USE FOR RUNNING THE GAME. CLICK SHORTCUT TAB... IN THE TARGET ADD "-steam +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1” WITHOUT QUOTES AT THE END INSTEAD OF JUST "-steam" "
Also, remove your windows temp files and have a clean installation.
It worked for me!

The last one should, if working, solve it without any hardware adjustments.
Good luck
