So someone said 'Hey khuskan, record some new footstep sounds'. So I did. Little did I know that it would turn into the most epic recording session ever.
First I had to scout possible locations. What I needed was a generic concrety footstep noise (think current combine footsteps) that would sound very military and nice. First idea was to go outside but the windy weather and me generally living in England put a bit of a damper on that idea. Fortunatly, my kitchen was having a bit of a makeover, and had lovely exposed uneven concrete floors.
Pardon the really shitty camera quality - I dropped it a few times onto various hard surfaces and its never focused properly ever since
Thus I begun the task of moving all my gear from up upstairs studio (read: Bedroom) downstairs. A list of everything that I moved about
:
- 1 shure SM58 microphone
- 1 Behringer Xenyx 1222 fx mixing desk
- 1 15ft XLR to XLR cable
- 1 Samsung Q1 mobile PC + power supply
- 1 M-Audio audiophile external USB soundcard + power supply
- 1 dual phono - phono lead
- 1 extension lead
- The dogeiest 2 way power splitter EVAR.
Groovy. Now I set the Mic up for recording. For those in the know, the SM58 isn't exactly made for this kind of task, but I feel the bass responce it has really added a little more depth into the sounds I recorded. Also it's very sensitive.
The mic is sat on a little cork mat as to stop it picking up vibrations right off the floor. I was using the stand before, but it was too high up and was picking up my nuts knocking together louder than the footsteps.
