Default Server Optimums

Okie dokie, I have yet too host a SourceFort server, or see any of the spec's for the current servers, but can any sys admin's give me some pointers on how well the following would run, and some suggested blocklimits/player limits:

Also, it would be interesting to see your limits, specs and a speedtest.net result.

Here is the server I would be using if I decide to host:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ Processor
2048MB RAM
4GB Page file

You can take the speedtest at speedtest.net, it's one of the most accurate there is.

If people could share this information it would really help me.

The specs on that computer are certainly plenty, but that connection is really lacking. I'd be surprised if you could get 8 players on it without lagging.

I presumed it would be something like that; what would be the optimum upload for a 24 player server?

I was playing with 19 earlier; but a pub server with 19 players doesn't turn out well; (see Funny Fort 2, fot screenshots)

We used to beta test on my connection, which was very similar to that. You can get 10+ on the server, if you are willing to spend a long time playing with it's rates (and no, I'm not talking about using the ratetweaker plugin). Eventually someone will join, and everyones pings will spike by 200-400. That's when you've hit your limit.

There's a guide about this on the steam forums.

Also note that it is a bad idea to play on the server. You *might* be able to get away with it by setting the client and server to run on seperate cores, but then you may run into memory problems. (If you have to use the swapfile, you can say goodbye to preformance)

What is the effect of playing on your own server? Usually theres no problem, at least thats what I've found with most games.

You can't really use a PC being used as a dedicated server as a normal use PC any more. The dedicated server takes up alot of ip bandwidth and will basically monopolize one of your CPU cores and a good chunk of RAM. If you start downloading some files or something the server performance will drop and all your regulars will complain endlessly.

Oh right, I only meant as a map testing facility, it won't have much effect then will it, if it's just me, or me and a few others map testing?
