Some words...
It's been a little over two months since v1.9.3 was released. It was a bit rushed; I think we can all agree on that. We gave you guys a date that we would release on and we held up to our end of the bargain. In hindsight we should have tested more. There were some pretty clear bugs that we didn't catch in our "testing" sessions. The blame can fall on more than a few people, and I suppose I could throw myself in the group. (I just make sharp looking models though.)
So where is v1.9.4? That's the question isn't it? Well it's on its way. Be assured. The problems have been the same that have plagued SourceForts ever since its inception. Delays were always common. In response to the criticism we received, we simply stopped giving out release dates. (May, 2006 anyone?) Version 1.9.4 was given the title "bugfix release”. It's catchy, sounds good, and sounds easy. Well nothing is easy. It's being worked on, but inevitable feature requests have crept into the release delaying it further.
There is also the problem of developer reliability. The human aspect if you will. I can depend on my computer. It's harder to depend on the staff though. How many coders have joined our ranks and simply disappeared? Not responding to emails, not getting on MSN, not coding for SourceForts. (HisChild and Zoc, thanks for staying on this long, and keep up the awesome work.)
The most important thing for you to think on is that this is a hobby. I get home from school, check the SourceForts message boards, hang around IRC, and then call it a night. It’s hard to get stuff done when the most you’ve done in the past month is install and skin a fresh Wiki. It’s not that much different from the other developers. Khuskan is a sound engineer working on a mod that has used one of his sounds. (The intro music if you’re curious.)
Here ends my explanation. It probably didn’t answer any of your questions. You already knew everything you just read. Version 1.9.4 is on the way, as it has always been, and we’re trying as lackadaisically as possible to get it out the door.

We recently tested 1.9.4 in a "League scenario" and it ran surprisingly smooth. I don't wholey expect the fixes to take incredibly long.

some the exploits that were in 193 i would think would be extremely hard to find out in testing on a beta team because you guys all know how to play the game and usually u dont shoot the flag because you think it does nothing, or have a single player get over 2 caps making his score go down to 48 or w/e, and all the other things that went wrong. You can't really blame you guys for what happened there, but since 194 is a "bugfix" version you guys should try anything that pops in your head that could go wrong and try it out now that you know what happened when you didn't do that before releasing 193.

It's amazing how little seems to have been learned from 193. 193 was supposed to be a "bugfix and gameplay balance". What fucked it over was the fact that a bunch of new features were incorporated into it (block counter, smoke trails, spec. mode, etc.).
When something is supposed to be a bug fix, then keep it at that. Leave the features for later. New features shouldn't be put into the patch for a version with serious bugs, putting in new features delays the release of the patch as well as adding more bugs pertaining to the new features.

Smoke trails and Block counter haven't caused bugs. Specmode was always going to be something added since people have been complaining about the lack of spec mode for ages. Go in the 1.9.3 suggest thread.

My point is that in 192 we had a few bugs, none incredibly serious.
After 193, we have more bugs and several are quite serious (Shotgun delay, etc.)
So instead of adding anything or spending any more time making features, just forget about all of that and fix the bugs, nothing else.

Azlan, beta testing for 1.9.4 is going in a much more structured way. While we schedule league games and pub style games, we also simply attempt to break the game and the maps. Shooting grenades, rockets and guns at everything and anything, testing the game with different server rules, using specialised testing software to force the game through several resolution and graphics changes at once along with several other tests.
While 1.9.4 is primarily a fixing release, 1.9 has been with us for three years now, it deserves to go out with dignity.

I think Kellsch is actually touching up an important point, and that is setting priorities.
And in this case I agree, that the bugs should be worked on first and have a higher priority than these other features.
On the other hand I can completely give the dev team the right to work on stuff they like; since they do it for fun and not for cash.
There should be found a good balance, though.
