I have to say that I agree that the metal looks too "clean" or washed out. One of the reasons is to save on texture memory it isnt that large a vtf. Another is that these are meant to be fresh from SF headquarters general issue fort building materials. The one that makes most of the difference is that they are low poly since there are so many on screan at once. With low poly counts the vertex lighting tends to give it a monotone finish.
Still rather snappy though imho.
