The Scoring System
Ok, so these are a few ideas to address the large number of new players that play the combat rounds as deathmatch instead of CTF.
Remove kills from the scoreboard during the game
Currently kills are shown on the scoreboard, and that therefore allows the player to see how many kills he/she has, and the list is ordered by the number of kills. This therefore apparently makes kills more important that points to the individual player.
Therefore I think the scoreboard should show only the points that the player has scored, and the list should always be ordered by this value. On the final scoreboard at the end of the game, however, kills can be shown to satisfy the players curiosity (similar to L4D)
Secondly, make the point reward as 100 for a cap, and 5 or 10 for a touch, but create more opportunities to score points
In the current versions of SF, the only people who will score points are those that actually touch the flag, which is very difficult for new players, so they concentrate of killing as many people as possible, and in their quest for this, they either become snipers, or create a large amount of rocket spam.
If other methods of scoring points are created, for example killing an enemy flagcarrier, killing an enemy that is within touching distance of the flag (ie inside the flag defense), or building combo blocks, then these new players will start to score points, and make scoring the points their prime objective. If all the points are awarded for achievements related to the CTF element of the game, then the side effect of this is that they will then participate in that element of the game. Leaving the cap with easily the largest reward, will enforce the fact that the ultimate goal is to capture the flag, and to get maximum points.
Now, I know that some of these ideas will not work with 2.0/Rapture/whatever it's called, but I'm sure some of the issues that I've brought up are relevant.
Discuss.
