what about the 2 oldfags/newfags circles? It's really hard for new polayers to pug or even play in the "oldfag circle"

The problem SF always had was a large portion of the active player base were mostly interested in things like this. If you take TF2 as an example, the majority of players don't give a shit about advanced skills or tactics or anything that the minority competitive community care about, but the game works well on both fronts because it allows these elements to flourish in their own right without messing up the pubbers fun. SF never had a proper balance of pub/pro, it was always quite even and a such there were always going to be a lot of unhappy people either way if someone attempted a defined direction. Pubs would have been fine if there were enough public players, but it gets problematic when every pub server has a pro or two who use these kinds of things to their advantage.

Honestly though if you think scroll jumping was a core part of average SF experience then you really grasped it the wrong way. Pros do what pros do, it's the same in every game. Trick jumping isn't something that is "wrong because it's hard to learn". If it makes the game better for some people then it's great, but there needs to be a well formed gameplay experience seperate from it in which a few cool jumps can't make this meta-game fall apart. If you can't achieve that then scrap it, but don't do it because it's "too hard to learn".

I think the tl;dr is that our playerbase is far too small to sustain a viable group of pros and a viable group of pubbers.

Steam pretty much hid the modsection so that you can only find it if you are looking for it lol.

Sf still did a pretty good job getting people without Steam advertising (1.9.2)

Like someone else said, that basically just comes down to the limited playerbase. When you have a competitive community that is so tight-knit that you need to know someone to find games, the scene is doomed to failure. If you look at a game like TF2 (hardly the pinnacle of eSports, but still) it's 6v6 community has a more closed off community of players but they are purely the most skilled players - the kind who go to events and win 5k or whatever - that is how the SF pro community functioned minus the LANs etc. However, in TF2 there is then a group of 5000 players or so (europe) who sit inbetween the public players and these elite players who step by step provide a bridge between these two groups. SF never had that. There was the shit, and there was the elite. That will never work.
