for brand names: dell and hp tend to be cheap
one of my roommates has an MSI laptop- it's kinda flimsy but not too bad
If you can get by with a "netbook" ("" b/c now they all run full os's, have multiple gigs of ram, and up to 11' screens *facepalm*) the asus eee line is known to be durable

personally i wouldn't go with a brand you haven't heard of: i had an averatec laptop for a year - the thing was more trouble than it was worth.

If you have the cash, spring for a business class laptop such as a Lenovo. Those things are solid.

Completely agree with this. I absolutely love my Lenovo Thinkpad. Easily the best laptop I've ever owned.

I'll just leave this here: http://www.lenovo.com/familyandfriends
(saved me $700 on my laptop)

Jajajaja, me too. Which model are you on?

And yeah, don't believe all the stick you hear about Dell laptops. On saying that, I would go HP - they do some pretty solid stuff for budgets.

The W500. It's the one they issued me at Cisco, so I got to test drive it all summer and ended up buying my own when I left.

I veto'd working for Cisco for a year so I could carry on living with my girlfriend. Did you find it worthwhile, or did I not miss anything?

Buy refurbished. I did and got an awesome computer almost half off. The only hint that the computer had been refurbished was that the sticker around the windows CD key was peeling off a bit.

Ummm, surely HP, Dell or Acer have some cheap or midrange laptops, I bought a Samsung for 660 AU (300 EU I guess) and it runs Steam games alright.
