5/1/2010 Interdisciplinary Team offers Mobility Solution for Individuals with Paralyzing Disease
Meeting in 2007 as Irving ‘fellows,’ Petra Kaufmann, MD, (Neurology) and Elisa Konofagou, PhD, (Biomedical Engineering) realized their areas of expertise could merge in a new way and develop a gravity neutral orthotic (GNO) to assist patients with a debilitating disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).  Through a CaMPR pilot grant, together with colleagues from their home departments and the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine, this multidisciplinary research team developed a novel approach that will help individuals with this severe disease accomplish everyday movements most of us take for granted—from scratching one’s nose to waiving ‘hello.’  Click here to watch video.
