Adapting Cities to Climate Change
To date, discussions of how to address climate change have focused far more on mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions) than adaptation (coping with the storms, floods, sea-level rise and other impacts that climate change will bring). The limited discussions on adaptation have also given little attention to cities. But many cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean are at high risk from climate change.

Sustainable Development Opinion Paper:
The trouble with travel and trees
The aviation industry is a small – although fast-growing – contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, but per kilometre its impact outstrips that of any other form of transport. As today’s technology looks unlikely to reduce that impact significantly over the next 25 years, aviation has become a key issue in the climate change debate. Many air travellers and people working in the travel industry see carbon offsetting as a viable green solution to the problem. But how accurate is that view?

Development and Adaptation Days at COP11
Development and Adaptation Days has become an anticipated part of each Conference of the Parties - an opportunity for the international climate change and development communities to share new approaches, explore common concerns and further adaptation efforts in developing countries. IIED and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), together with the Regional and International Networking Group (RING), continued this tradition at COP11 in Montreal, Canada, on 3 and 4 December. The popularity of the event continues to grow, and this year it was attended by over 300 people.

Climate Change consensus grows in Westminster
A cross-party group of influential UK Members of Parliament have sponsored a House of Commons motion on the links between climate change and development, calling on the Government to fund action to support poorer countries and put these issues centre-stage at the forthcoming UN meeting in Montreal to discuss the progress of the Convention on Climate Change. IIED is urging all MPs to sign the motion (Early Day Motion 886), which was tabled by All-Party Parliamentary Group chair Colin Challen MP with support from former Environment Secretary Michael Meacher MP (Labour), the chair of the House of Commons International Development Committee Malcolm Bruce MP (Liberal Democrat)and its former chair Tony Baldry MP (Conservative), Ann McKechin MP (Labour) and Peter Bottomley MP (Conservative).
The motion can be viewed at

From 6-8 July 2005, the G8 was happening in Scotland. To coincide with this event, the Working Group on Climate Change and Development held the 'GW8' on July 5th in Edinburgh. Eight speakers from poor countries described the impacts of climate change on the lives of people in their country. They described barriers to further progress and opportunities for tackling climate change and reducing its impact on poor people.

Becoming Carbon Neutral while supporting Sustainable Development:
A Challenge for Development and Environment NGOs
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are contributing to climate change – the evidence is now clear. Efforts to reduce GHG emissions through government action at the international level, through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol, have led to modest action in some countries. However, responsibility for reducing emissions also lies with private companies, non-government organisations, communities and individuals.
