Places connect us to the past, host community and cultural traditions, and keep local environments distinctive. City Lore and the Municipal Art Society founded the Place Matters project in 1998 to identify, promote, and protect such places in New York City.

The future of mariachi in New York is safe in the hands of Ramón Ponce Jr. and his father, Ramón Sr. Twenty years ago, father and son founded the group Mariachi Real de Mexico, and they then started the Mariachi Academy of New York. The Academy, where the younger Ramón is the Musical Director, will be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Classes meet at St. Paul School on 118th Street in East Harlem, and registration for the 2012-2013 school year will be open from Tuesday, October 8th through Thursday, October 11th!

The Census was created to help broaden the ways that preservation is understood and practiced in New York City. The Census offers an alternative approach to identifying, celebrating and preserving places that matter to the people and communities who love them.

City Lore and Place Matters are proud to partner with the Asian American Arts Alliance, which will be mounting Locating the Sacred, a twelve-day, twenty-event festival that brings together artists and spaces in New York for creative explorations of the "sacred."

Now enter the mill, where the pieces of the piano are created and some are fit together. This area is loud, and there is a constant machine hum. Unlike the previous areas, which were immaculately swept, here sawdust covers the floor, and the woody odor permeates the air.
