State of the planet film to open Rio+20 Summit (20-22 June 2012)

A visually spectacular animated film on the state of the planet encapsulating 20 years of IGBP research and produced by IGBP and partners, is scheduled to open the largest ever United Nations summit, Rio+20, tomorrow, 20 June.

Future Earth launched at Rio+20


A new 10-year international initiative on global environmental research for sustainability was successfully launched at the mammoth UN Rio+20 Summit in June. The initiative, Future Earth: research for global sustainability, will provide a cutting-edge platform to coordinate scientific research internationally.

Future Earth proposes 3 research themes at final meeting


The team responsible for the initial design of the new Future Earth initiative met in Paris on 20-21 September to agree on the broad outlines of recommendations for the research framework, governance, stakeholder engagement and communications strategy. In the wake of Rio+20, the Team also agreed on the importance of strategically positioning Future Earth in the science-policy landscape, as a key science provider for the definition of Sustainable Development Goals.

IPCC call for expert reviewers


The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is inviting experts to participate as Expert Reviewers in the Working Group One Assessment Report 5 (Climate Change the Physical Basis) to be published in 2013. The draft document will be available for review until 30 November. Register here.

The UN's largest event, Rio+20, opened last week with a short state-of-the-planet film encapsulating 20 years of IGBP research including concepts such as the Anthropocene and the Great Acceleration. The film, Welcome to the Anthropocene, was produced by IGBP's Owen Gaffney and Globaia's Felix Pharand Deschenes.
