    In 2003, a forlorn and frightened cat was found abandoned in an apartment building by a veterinary tech student attending Holyoke Community College. Rather than take the cat to the animal shelter, Barbara adopted and named her Truffles.

    In 2012 the Sierra Club made extraordinary progress in advancing a new Tribal Forest model of conservation in Vermont. And now, with your support, we intend to close on the first Nulhegan Abenaki Tribal Forest in over 200 years by the first of the year.

    This first, modestly sized, tribal forest (70 beautiful acres in the heart of Nulhegan traditional territory) will be in Barton, in the Northeast Kingdom, and will be owned directly by the Nulhegan Abenaki Tribe, with permanent conservation easements on the land held by the Vermont Land Trust and the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board (VHCB).

    BMH Offers Free Prostate Screening Clinic, October 29  View Printable Version

    HealthBrattleboro Memorial Hospital is offering a free prostate screening clinic from 5:30-7:30 pm on Monday, October 29 on the third floor of the BMH Dunham Building.

    Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death for men in America. In addition to the free screening, the visit will include a PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam. To be eligible, individuals must be between 40 and 70-years old and have not had a PSA blood test in the past 12 months.

    HealthBrattleboro Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Services will offer another edition of its five-week “Standing Tall Spine Health: Level 2” program beginning Monday, October 29.

    The program is designed for individuals diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis who have previously completed the Level 1 course. The classes consist of advanced strengthening exercises for the core and postural muscles as well as a continuation of progressive balance challenges. Level 1 education principles will be reinforced through class discussion while exercising.

    HealthBrattleboro Memorial Hospital will offer a free presentation on computer ergonomics, Monday, October 29 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Brew Barry Conference Center.

    “How to Properly Set Up Your Workstation” is for anyone who experiences stiffness or discomfort when sitting at a computer for work or personal use. Chris Vitello, occupational therapist and certified hand therapist, will demonstrate how to set up a computer station in the best possible way to fend off pain and injuries.

    RecreationThe Brattleboro Nelson Withington Skating Rink opened this past Saturday for the season. Offering public ice times on all but Thursday; A great rainy day activity or just to get up and out for some fun adventurist activity.

    Mondays is Dollar night (7-9pm) making Monday the Fun-day. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday have a 7:00-9:00pm ice time and for the “day-timers” both Saturday (10:30am-12:15) and Sunday (1:45pm-4:45) can add to any weekend activity. The rink opens most days when schools have a snow day.

    Learn about woodworking and tiling through building a simple pine tiled-top end table. Some basic woodworking machines and power tools will be used, safety procedures and some joinery taught, and finishing options discussed. Bring a pencil, tape measure and tiles that would work within a 12 inch square and with white grout.

    PoliticsOn Friday, October 29, Windham World Affairs Council welcomes Tom Redden, professor at Southern Vermont College (and formerly Dean of Students at Marlboro College) to speak on the upcoming US Presidential Election. Four years ago, Professor Redden spoke to this body providing his analysis of Barack Obama's foreign policy challenges. Now, Professor Redden will update with a discussion of Obama's successes, failures, and future policies (as opposed to Romney's) if he were elected. The title of his talk will be "A Reflection on Foreign and Domestic Policy"

    MONTPELIER – Sen. Vince Illuzzi said Monday that if elected state auditor one of his top priorities will be to conduct a performance review to determine whether the state has proper controls in place to design, develop, operate and manage its information technology assets.

    “Information technology (IT) systems are important for two key reasons,” Illuzzi said. “First, Vermont taxpayers spend millions each year on IT projects.

    ObituariesThe NY Times says that George McGovern passed away this morning at age 90.

    He's the last politician that I could say was a bit of a hero to me. A very decent man, I voted for him in my first presidential election in 1972.

    I was in Norway and had to hitch hike about 50 miles (round trip) to get my ballot notarized.

    Then I stayed up late to see the results as President Nixon, a man who needed to tell America that he was "not a crook" (not that anybody believed him) beat McGovern 2-1.
