Welcoming the 2012-2013 U.S. Fulbright Grantees |

 We are pleased to announce the arrival of the new U.S. Fulbright grantees for the 2012-2013 academic year. A total of 7 senior scholars and 6 students will teach and undertake research in universities located in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Braşov, Constanta and Timişoara. Following the tradition of the program, the American grantees participated in an Orientation Seminar, intended to help the new grantees adapt more easily to the Romanian environment. They met high Romanian and American officials, representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest and of the Fulbright Board of Directors.  As part of the Orientation, the American grantees also participated in the 2012 RAAS-Fulbright Conference “Remapping Urban Spaces – American Challenges”, October 4-6, 2012 organized by the Romanian Association of American Studies and hosted by Ovidius University in Constanta. The grantees had the opportunity to present papers, participate in panel discussions and get acquainted with the Romanian academic environment. After the conference, the whole group enjoyed a visit to the Archeological Museum in Constanta and a wine-tasting lunch at the famous Murfatlar Vineyards. Fulbright Roundtable: Enriching the Exchange Experience |

 On October 4, 2012, as part of the Biennial RAAS-Fulbright Conference Re-mapping Urban Spaces: American Challenges held at Ovidius University in Constanţa, a roundtable of former and current Fulbright grantees from both the USA and Romania came together to discuss ways that the exchange experience could be enriched for future grantees. The focus of this event built upon a previous roundtable held at Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu as part of the 2012 Society for Romanian Studies Conference. |

The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission announces the annual competition for Fulbright Senior Postdoctoral Awards for Romanian professors, researchers and professionals who have a doctoral degree or equivalent (certified). Grants are available for conducting research and/or lecturing in the U.S. universities. The Romanian applicants are invited to submit applications no later than November 5, 2012.  On August 25, 2012, a team of scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center, Woods Hole Science Center, and the University of South Florida (USF) boarded the USCGC Healy in Barrow, Alaska, to begin a 4-week journey in the Arctic Ocean.

 The seminar “How to make the application. Tips and guidance” will take place on Friday, October 19, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Fulbright Commission. The seminar will provide information and advice about preparation of the application file for the Fulbright Senior Award.

Gender Equality Festival |

 Romanian Fulbright alumna Irina Costache is helping to organize the 7th Edition of the Gender Equality Festival, entitled "A Different Kind of Women and a Different Kind of Men". The festival, held under the patronage of A.L.E.G., a local NGO with the mission to promote gender equality and combat all forms of gender-based discrimination and violence, will take place in Sibiu between September 21st and September 28th. Through the events planned for September 21st, A.L.E.G. joins the "Peace One Day Campaign" against domestic violence launched by the Council of Europe. Moreover, through the events held on September 28th, it also addresses the world campaign for reproductive rights. |

Pre-departure orientation for Romanian grantees 2012 |

 On July 12, the Romanian - U.S. Fulbright Commission organized the pre-departure orientation in honor of the Romanian Fulbright grantees, TEA fellows and independent students starting their study/research program in the U.S., academic year 2012-2013. The Fulbrighters had the opportunity to meet high officials of the U.S. Embassy, members of the Romanian Fulbright Board of Directors, representatives of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, American and Romanian Fulbright alumni, professors and researchers who introduced them to the American environment. |
