Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District

Text Box: Our Mission Statement: “To promote the conservation, protection, improvement and responsible development of the natural resources on the rural and urban lands within its boundaries.”

The Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District* was created in 1943. Our District boundaries encompass most of Bernalillo County and parts of southern Sandoval County, including the cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. Ciudad is managed by an elected Board of 5 private citizens familiar with local natural resource issues. Ciudad's current Board of Supervisors include a legislator, educators, scientists and an organic farmer each representing key region of the District.

Ciudad SWCD serves as a clearinghouse for information and resources. We strive to take available technical, financial, and educational resources and focus them to meet the needs of the people in our District for the preservation of our diverse natural resources: soil, water, air, native vegetation and wildlife.

What is a Soil & Water Conservation District?

When you want information about the natural resources in your neighborhood, you can turn to your local Soil and Water Conservation District. SWCDs are political subdivisions of state government, responsible for conservation work within their boundaries. New Mexico's 47 SWCDs receive administrative support from the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA). These Districts provide a means for all interested people in a community or region to work individually or together for natural resource conservation. They rely largely on grant funding, agency partnerships, volunteers and the cooperation of landowners to achieve their primary objectives- the responsible development, maintenance and preservation of all of our natural resources. These include our water, air, soils, wildlife, grasslands, forests, and urban and recreational assets as well.

The reasons that Conservation Soil & Water Districts exist are:

  • Provide local input into the management of our natural resources
  • Set out a plan of action to address locally-determined resource concerns
  • Encourage voluntary implementation of that plan by district landowners

Ciudad SWCD's Board of Supervisors wishes to truly represent the visions and needs of the people within their District.

In order to identify needs of the community and provide priorities for our work, we need your input.    Please take our survey
