The Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority is a New York State Public benefit corporation created by the New York State Legislature in 1968, whose mission is to plan, create, co-ordinate and maintain a balanced community of commercial, residential, retail, and park space within its designated 92-acre site on Manhattan's lower west side. Parcels of land are leased to developers who build in accordance with the Authority's guidelines, which also incorporate green provisions mandating state of the art environmental specifications to maximize energy efficiency and minimize water usage. With more than five million square feet of environmentally sustainable construction on its 92-acre site, Battery Park City is the largest "green" neighborhood in the world.
Battery Park City is home to 36 acres of parks and gardens and 20 pieces of public art.
