Description:

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa is a land, sea and space grant institution and rated as a Carnegie Research Universities institution. The library serves the Manoa campus as well as the other nine UH system campuses. It is a member of five Asia-centered American academic consortia and the Hawaiian collection is unequaled in the world -- collecting and preserving materials related to native Hawaiian language, culture, and history. The Archives and Manuscripts collection includes the Hawaii War Records Depository and Hawaii Congressional papers as well as the Plantation Archives formerly held by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association and the Japanese American Veterans Collection. The Pacific Collection is internationally recognized for the excellence of its holdings, which include materials relating to the island regions of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

One purpose of this website is to provide information about Rotuman society and culture to those who wish to learn more about the island and its people. It contains information about Rotuman history, archaeology, language, population, culture, economy, religion, land tenure, and political organization, as well as maps. A summary of recent publications concerning Rotuma is also presented.

A second purpose is to provide Rotumans, and those already familiar with the island, with news from Rotuman communities around the world. Far more Rotumans now live abroad (in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Europe) than live on the home island. This website is intended to give them a place where they can share news and communicate with one another. For these purposes a news page is included, as well as a bulletin board.
