The mission of the program is to provide high-quality military personnel and equipment to support federal, state, and local drug LEAs as well as community based organizations that work to reduce the demand for drugs. The AL-CD currently consists of Army National Guard soldiers and Air National Guard airmen on full time active duty status in accordance with Title 32, Section 112, United States Code. These soldiers and airmen are from National Guard units throughout the state and perform counterdrug (CD) duties in a support role. In January of 1955, WCIQ on Mount Cheaha began operation as the nation's ninth non-commercial television station. Four months later, with the sign-on of WBIQ in Birmingham, Alabama became the first state in the nation with an educational television network. Alabama Public Television made its first broadcast as a network in April 1955.

Annually, we serve over 230,000 people through a broad network of state mental illness and intellectual disability facilities and community-based services. These services include residential, outpatient, and prevention programs with respect to substance abuse addiction. We are very proud of the fact that our state operated facilities have achieved and maintained high standards in health care provision. Currently, we operate one developmental center for individuals with intellectual disabilities and six facilities for individuals with mental illnesses. Through community-based services the department contracts with hundreds of local service providers in all 67 counties. Our nearly 3,000 employees are among the best in the nation. From the housekeeping, direct care staff, medical staff, and clinical staff at the facilities to administrative staff at the central office, each person plays an integral part in the overall successful and cost-efficient administration of the ADMH.
