Some words...

Tab

It's been a little over two months since v1.9.3 was released. It was a bit rushed; I think we can all agree on that. We gave you guys a date that we would release on and we held up to our end of the bargain. In hindsight we should have tested more. There were some pretty clear bugs that we didn't catch in our "testing" sessions. The blame can fall on more than a few people, and I suppose I could throw myself in the group. (I just make sharp looking models though.)

So where is v1.9.4? That's the question isn't it? Well it's on its way. Be assured. The problems have been the same that have plagued SourceForts ever since its inception. Delays were always common. In response to the criticism we received, we simply stopped giving out release dates. (May, 2006 anyone?) Version 1.9.4 was given the title "bugfix release”. It's catchy, sounds good, and sounds easy. Well nothing is easy. It's being worked on, but inevitable feature requests have crept into the release delaying it further.

There is also the problem of developer reliability. The human aspect if you will. I can depend on my computer. It's harder to depend on the staff though. How many coders have joined our ranks and simply disappeared? Not responding to emails, not getting on MSN, not coding for SourceForts. (HisChild and Zoc, thanks for staying on this long, and keep up the awesome work.)

The most important thing for you to think on is that this is a hobby. I get home from school, check the SourceForts message boards, hang around IRC, and then call it a night. It’s hard to get stuff done when the most you’ve done in the past month is install and skin a fresh Wiki. It’s not that much different from the other developers. Khuskan is a sound engineer working on a mod that has used one of his sounds. (The intro music if you’re curious.)

Here ends my explanation. It probably didn’t answer any of your questions. You already knew everything you just read. Version 1.9.4 is on the way, as it has always been, and we’re trying as lackadaisically as possible to get it out the door.

Slightly more interesting news

Tab

Yes all of you seriously serious people. This is a thing called a joke, so if you're about to make a post saying how unbelievably un-serious this thread was. It will be deleted.

Due to lack of interesting updates I have decided to lower the overall tone of the forum and disclose an everyday conversation between a developer and a design team member.

Quote:

RedXIII^ says:
I'll hit you up when I hear a new version
Mark says:
That sounds slighty erotic, so I'm game.
RedXIII^ says:
I'll make a newground sooner or later and put some tunes up.
RedXIII^ says:
Yeah when I said hit I meant penetrate.
Mark says:
And when you said 'you up' you meant 'in your anus'.
RedXIII^ says:
We seem to have a connection here..
RedXIII^ says:
Both mental and physical.
Mark says:
and sexual.
Mark says:
Infact, mostly sexual.
Mark says:
Actually, entirely sexual.
RedXIII^ says:
I bet plosive words turn you on.
Mark says:
Yes.
RedXIII^ says:
Oh good
RedXIII^ says:
So if I said penis you would be in a state of euphoria due to both a plosive and a sexual reference?
Mark says:
Unable to type pleasure overload.

It's back..

Site went down. Now it's back. Thanks for standing by. Also, the five days of forum data I said we lost... well I found it!

Scheduled website downtime

Tab

The SourceForts website will be intermittent and possibly unavailable in the next few days while we transfer everything over to a new server, so expect some downtime.

After the move we'll be putting some focus into the website and players interactions with it; some great new features coming soon! Also the move should hopefuly rectify the time warp problem and speed up page load.

Everything should be back to normal by next week!

IRC is unaffected. Use it.

Let's do the time warp again

Tab

Sorry for all the time warp bullshit. Some ridiculously high server loads over here have caused those. Should be good in 20 minutes or less.

You've got a surprise coming. ;)

Calling all Polyglots!

Tab

Do you speak another language? In order to better support non English-speaking players, we're looking for talented linguists to translate SourceForts into all the languages spoken by our fanbase. While we can't guarentee you a position on the team, we are still looking for active testers/contributors.

We have a pretty wide fanbase internationally, and although members of the team speak several languages, we're looking for native speakers of the language to provide the translations. Go ahead and send an email to info@sourcefortsmod.com with the subject "Translation - <language>", filling in <language> with the chosen language of translation.

Edit: We've been totally inundated with German translations at the moment, so until we decide which we're going to use/if we're going to merge some of them, we aren't particularly looking for any more. Danke Schon!

Our current translations can be found in your SourceForts game folder under /resources/SourceForts_language.txt. To being translation, simply copy the file SourceForts_english.txt and edit it with your new language content.

While replacing the word for Soldier with the word for deli meat may be humorous, all translations will be checked before release. ;)

I'd also like to give a mention out to two new members of the development team, Black, who you're all familiar with, who'll be helping out with mapping duties and Xyal, an experienced programmer who's come to help us push towards 2.0.

Q1, 2008

Tab

A lot has been happening on the SourceForts team over the last few weeks, and being the Holiday season, it's only stuff to be happy about!

First off, we're getting 2.0 development into full swing, but of course, the quickest way to a failed mod is just telling everyone to start working. That's why we've spent a lot of extra man hours searching around for ways to streamline our development.

We've set up an account on the project management tool FogBugz kindly supplied by the up-and-coming Manhattan based software studio Fog Creek. If you're really interested in the whole system, you should pop over to their site to give it a read through, it's got some incredible features which should really speed up our work flow - in fact, it's getting so well known in the industry, it's used by the well known game studio 2k games who are of course the artists behind the 2007 hit FPS/RPG BioShock.

As for our file distribution, we've switched our SubVersion servers over to CVSdude, a profesional hosting company who supply SVN to big companies like Apple, the BBC and Intel. For those not in the know, SubVersion is a way to make sure that everyone has exactly the same copy of a program at exactly the same time, and allows users to collaborate on the work quickly and efficiently.

We'd also like to give a big thank you to the community at Tigris for their combined open-source efforts in programming Tortoise SVN, the powerful SubVersion tool we recommend to all our staff and beta testers.

As you can see, we've gone to great lengths to find the best of the best supporting software to produce the best mod of our combined abilities!

But the good things don't stop there; we'd also like you to join us in celebrations and congratulations for our latest team member, Slice.

Slice may seem a little new around the block, but actually, he applied for his role as modeller almost a year ago, while the team itself was under somewhat of a crisis - and I think I'm speaking for the whole team when I say we're very lucky he decided to come back to us. We're a little caught into development of concepts at the moment, and we don't want to give too many little details away at this stage, but here's a lovely (somewhat untextured) shot of a model Slice produced of the first concept (though we're currently on the second iteration and this is almost totally outdated) of one of our planned new weapons. I'll let you guys decide exactly what it is! (clicky clicky)

So there we have it, Version 2 is now in the works and we're going to keep you as up to date with the changes as much as possible. Keep an eye on the Developer Diaries for more media-in-progress.

Of course, we're always looking for more staff members to join our ranks - even if you've applied and you haven't heard back from us yet, we keep all applications on cold-storage for when we need them. We don't, for example, need 20 mappers just yet, as we have no tasks we can set them on, and setting up so many people with the kit to get into development would take up a lot of time!

But that isn't the end of this epic news post. We're still working at full steam on 1.9.4, and HisChild is killing off the bugs so fast, we're considering renaming him to 'The Fumigator'. We don't want to set a solid release date just yet, as we can't really have much confidence in any estimation - while bugs get fixed, more are inevitably going to pop up.

Anyway, from everyone on the SourceForts team, we'd like to wish you all a happy new year!
