Join The Team! |
 |
This Page has been viewed 6265 times since March 2004! So you think you're man enough (or uh...woman enough if you're a lady) to join the team, eh? Well you've certainly come to the right place; Half-LifeFiles.com and HalfLife2Files.com are always in need of competent, talented staff to bring all the available content possible to Half-Life & Half-Life 2 gamers.
Listed below are the job positions we're hiring for at the moment. Before applying, keep in mind that most if not all of these jobs can often require a minimum time investment of two hours per day. If that gives you pause, then odds are working for the site isn't for you, we only want those who are committed, maybe even a little obsessed , with continuing to make this the only site people need turn to for anything Half-Life or Half-Life 2 related.
Interviewer
Not surprising, an interviewer's job is to come up with interviews. The usual suspects here will be mod teams, VALVe staff, and other people or groups involved in Half-Life 2 and the community.
Duties:
- Contact groups and members of the Half-Life 2 community to request an interview.
- Create a list of questions to ask that people are curious about and will find interesting.
- Conduct the interview.
- Add the completed interview to the HL2Files Interview Archive.
Dialup users and broadband users alike are encouraged to apply for interviewer. The only absolute requirements are that you're able to ask for an interview in a polite and intelligent manner and can pose interesting questions.
File Scout
One of the most important jobs at HL2Files is the file scout. A scout's main objective is to scour the internet for any and all files that we don't already have hosted on the site then send that to the file posters for adding.
Duties:
- Locate files by watching forums, news and mod sites, searching the internet, keeping an eye on IRC channels, etc.
- When a file is found, contact the developer (person who made the file) and request his/her permission for us to host the file.
- Once permission is given, send the file to either files@half-lifefiles.com or files@hl2files.com, depending on which game the file relates to, so the file posters can then add it to the site.
A broadband connection is strongly recommended for all the downloading and sending of files. Users on dialup can apply if they like and direct file posters to file links instead of sending files manually. Also recommended is a decent command of the English language, mainly for when you e-mail developers about hosting permission.
File Poster
Without the hard work of file posters, Files Network sites such as HL2Files would be just like all the other Half-Life 2 sites on the internet. We're always in need of capable people to fill this role and keep the site growing with the largest collection of new and old files for Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and the mods of each. Until Half-Life 2 or the HL2 editing tools are released, file posters will mostly be adding the wealth of Half-Life files & Half-Life mod files that exist.
Duties:
- Download files sent in by file scouts or submitted by users.
- Scan all files for viruses.
- Upload files to the Half-LifeFiles & HL2Files.com ftp servers.
- Add file to the website, write a description of the file that explains what people are downloading.
- Add screenshots of the file in action.
- Check the file info page of the posted file for any errors.
A basic knowledge of HTML is helpful but not required to apply for this job. However, a broadband internet connection is mandatory, preferably without a cap on the upload speed. It's also required that you are able to use the English language moderately well to write the descriptions of each file (or at least have a reliable spell check program). You don't have to be an Oxford graduate, we just want you able to write a description that makes sense and is spelled correctly. If you choose to apply for file poster, remember that your e-mail will act as an example of your spelling and punctuation.
News Hound
As a news hound your primary goal is to go frothing and wild-eyed into the world wide web and ring it for all the news possible. This is another job that is very time intensive as you'll be visiting news sites, mod sites, gaming sites, forums, IRC channels and so on looking for news to post every day. You can apply to do Half-Life news, Half-Life 2 news, or both.
Duties
- Locate news through various forms of media such as websites, IRC channels, forums, e-mail, or magazines. You do not have to have any magazine subscriptions to apply of course (just helps when looking for additional news).
- When a news item is found, add it to the appropriate website, either Half-LifeFiles or HL2Files, along with your own comments on the piece.
- Add any relevant images to the article.
- Make sure there are no errors, broken links, spelling mistakes, etc. in your own comments. Leave quoted material just as it was written.
Every visitor to the site wants as much up-to-date news as possible, therefore news hounds have to be active. Broadband is recommended for all the surfing and idling a news hound ends up doing, but it isn't a mandatory condition for applying. In fact, one of the best Files Network news hounds is a dialup user, so 56k'ers are welcome. You must possess solid English skills when it comes to grammar and spelling, no one wants to stumble through an article full of misspelled words and indecipherable sentences. Your e-mail application will demonstrate your competence in that area.
Public Relations Guru
PR Gurus are responsible for spreading the word about Half-LifeFiles & HL2Files.com as well as building relationships in the community, with mods, fan sites, news sites, and even the folks at VALVe. How is this accomplished? Mostly just by chatting on IRC channels and instant messaging programs, posting in forums, and corresponding through e-mail. While this sounds cushy enough, it does take up a lot of time to do properly.
Duties:
- Establish relationships in the Half-Life & Half-Life 2 communities, VALVe, and with related sites across the internet.
- Contact websites about link / button / banner exchanges.
- Chat on various IRC channels related to HL & HL2, post in forums of mods, fan sites, news sites and so on, maintain ties via e-mail or instant messaging.
A dialup connection is fine for this position, the only real requirements are that you have enough available time to "hobnob" with the community and that you can communicate effectively and present yourself professionally. A charming personality helps too.
Forum Moderator
Forum moderators spend their time in the forums, posting, answering member questions, helping new members with forum options, putting misplaced threads in their suitable categories, enforcing forum rules, and just generally seeing that the forums run smoothly.
Duties:
- Check the HL2Files.com Half-Life and Half-Life 2 forums daily.
- Post responses, new threads and answer questions.
- Keep threads in the appropriate forums.
- See that forum rules are followed.
- Take disciplinary action against repeat rule-breakers.
- Use common sense and good judgement in making decisions.
First and foremost, a forum moderator needs to make mature decisions when dealing with forum members. Moderators that fly off the handle, throw tantrums, or act like children only make the site, the forums, and themselves look bad. A moderator should also be able to put together a coherent sentence that people can actually understand. So, if you have a brain, love posting threads and reading through others, and enjoy whacking people with a crowbar, forum moderator might be the job for you. If you want to apply, make sure you register with Gaming Forums so we can add you to the staff. Click here to register.
Comments Moderator
A comments moderator does the same basic job as a forum moderator except he/she doesn't have as much to worry about.
Duties:
- Check all comments posted on the site daily.
- Edit comments that are inappropriate or break the rules.
- Answer questions and provide help whenever possible.
- Delete duplicate posts.
- Post comments of your own.
- Use common sense and good judgement in making decisions.
Just as with the forum moderator, a comments moderator must make mature decisions in dealing with problems (you can be a weirdo the rest of the time though) and be able to express himself/herself effectively.
If any of these opportunities interest you, e-mail Azzkiker and state the job you're applying for in the Subject line. Include any related experience you have, if any, and a little information about yourself (time zone & country for example). Only registered members of the site can become HL2Files staff. If you haven't registered yet, visit this page and sign up- don't worry, it's free and won't lead to unwanted spam; we've all been trained to endure endless hours of torture in order to keep your e-mails secret. Note that Half-LifeFiles and HL2Files do not handle Counter-Strike or Condition Zero. For information and files on either of those, visit CSCZFiles and let them know HL2Files sent you. |
