History of the CTSI TRUs

Founded in 1961, the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at the Medical College of Wisconsin was one of the first National Institutes of Health sponsored GCRC sites. In December, 2007, the GCRC officially became known as the Translational Research Units (TRUs) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) of Southeast Wisconsin. Every service once provided by the GCRC will continue to be offered within the CTSI, and new ones are in the process of being added.

As of December, 2007, the TRUs included an Adult Unit (the Adult TRU), located in the Lower Level Pavilion at Froedtert Hospital (FH), and an outpatient Pediatric Unit (the Pediatric TRU), located on the first floor of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW). The administrative component of the TRUs, as well as the TRUs Bionutrition and Body Composition Core and the CTSI Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistical cores, as well as one component of the fMRI Core (formerly the Imaging Core) are all located in space adjacent to the Adult TRU, while the CTSI Core Laboratory is located in the west wing of Froedtert Hospital, and the other component of the fMRI Core in the MACC Fund Research Center.

Adult TRUs

The secured Adult TRU is located in close proximity to the main entrance of the Pavilion building of Froedtert Hospital. The unit, which is staffed by 4 research nurses, includes 6 examination rooms for outpatient visits, and 6 beds in 3 study suites (one-half of one suite is the designated Body Composition Area). When overnight monitoring and/or sample collections are required, inpatients are housed on an inpatient unit on the 4th floor of the Pavilion Building, directly above the Adult TRU. The Adult TRU is supported by a nursing planning station, reception area, metabolic kitchen, consultation room (where nurses and physicians meet), soiled hold and cleaning rooms, and a supply room. A sample preparation area is located adjacent to the nursing planning station.

Pediatric TRU

The Pediatric TRU offers nursing care for research subjects and their families. The staff provides critical care monitoring, assessments, data collection, specimen collection, handling and storage, phlebotomy, infusions and IV starts and can assist physicians with procedures. Care, from infancy through adulthood, is individualized to meet a variety of research needs. More information...

VA-TRU

The new VA-TRU, established in autumn, 2008, occupies over 1000 sq. ft. of the 5th floor of the main hospital building at the Veteran's Medical Center and includes a reception area, office space for the nurse and the TRU Co-Director, and two large rooms for studies requiring large equipment, such as exercise machinery. The remaining space includes two fully equipped exam rooms, a supply room/laboratory, and a kitchen. The nurse performs research procedures, assists investigators in obtaining informed consent, and assists with procedures such as sample processing and data management, including access to VA national databases. The IRB at the VA approves and monitors all protocols for safety and compliance. All protocols have a VA physician as the principal investigator.

Community TRU

The new Community TRU seeks to establish small, temporary research facilities throughout Greater Milwaukee and beyond to support Community Engagement research. Among these sites are research units at underrepresented & minority community centers and agencies, as well as the Center for AIDS Intervention Research (CAIR) and similar cooperative centers. At these sites research facilities may be established and/or may avail them of the Mobile Outreach TRU, which serves as a link between the Hospital-based TRUs and the Community TRU. The Mobile Unit uses a dedicated trailer to transport staff, small equipment, and supplies to community locations, and transport subjects and patient samples from the community to specialized units within the hospital-based TRUs. When feasible, it will also serve as a mobile research facility to support larger studies at community sites.
