Last week, a 7.0 earthquake shook the small island of Hispaniola, the epicenter laying in close proximity to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Most of the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere is devastated, and the sad thing is they had just re-built after the 2008 hurricane season.
There are many American families that have been seeking to adopt Haitian children. As you can imagine, all of the paperwork necessary for an international adoption has been lost in the chaos caused by the earthquake. This leaves many families devastated, the the US State Department announced that they would review adoptions on a case-by-case basis and push certain cases through.
Relief efforts are also a big source of hype surrounding last week's earthquake. Wyclef Jean and Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are all high-profile individuals that are helping to raise money for the earthquake.
In addition, many stars urged their fans to give to the earthquake relief at the Golden Globe awards.
The US is doing a lot to help with the earthquake relief efforts. Today, scores of US troops landed on the lawn of what remains of the Presidential Palace. The US is sending military troops, health care professionals, food and supplies to the island nation to help with the devastation.
Many US citizens were in Haiti at the time of the earthquake. Search and rescue missions have uncovered some of the missing Americans, but not all. Among those still missing are a group of American students. They are thought to be under the rubble of the Hotel Montana in Haiti.
Each day that passes makes survival look more and more grim for those that are still trapped beneath the rubble that remains in Port-au-Prince. Those that are anxious to help have various avenues for which to donate money.
Helping out those in need is something that Americans do best. We have worked hard to help the Haitians with this devastation and we will continue to help them until our help is no longer needed.
You can donate to the relief efforts by going to Yele.org, which is the site that was set up by Wyclef Jean.
