Seeds for Haiti

“Seeds for Haiti” is a program launched by Bassin Zim EDF at the end of 2008 in response to the food crisis and devastation created by the four hurricanes that hit Haiti in the spring of the same year. It was an initiative to counter famine and create a seed bank with local seeds necessary for sustainable agriculture. This program helped us provide over 200 peasant families with corn and bean seeds for the last planting season. We were far from reaching our goals yet the interest of people in the community is steadily increasing to support and sustain this program.

About the Delegation Program

One year after the launching of the Seeds program we organized a delegation to the Plateau Central of Haiti from January 7th to January 12th Ten people from New York participated. The main objective of this delegation was to convey to the public the relevance of programs such as Seeds for Haiti and Trees for Haiti (to be launched 2010). In addition, impress upon them the necessity of supporting the grassroot/peasant organizations in their struggle to produce natural and unrefined food while contributing to the protection of the environment. Sending several delegations to Haiti is one of our programs every year.

Petition to Monsanto Corporation to stop shipping contaminated seeds to Haiti

In mid May of 2010, it was announced in Haiti that your company, Monsanto Corporation, decided to give 475 tons of seeds to Haiti. In fact, 60 tons had already been distributed in some areas. Perhaps you have been surprised at the criticism of this donation and at the protests against your company and the Haitian government for accepting what many people call a “poisonous gift.” On behalf of thousands of local farmers in Haiti, we demand that you halt further shipments of hybrid seeds to Haiti.....
