That's odd. The film has never had a copyright on it (either in titles sequence or end) and doesn't show up in a copyright.gov search. Is this an automated process erring on the side of caution (e.g. Plan 9 from Outer Space) or is it legit/for good?

As far as I have ever been able to find the film was published in January 1964 in the US with a 1963 notice. It was then not renewed. The film was first published in the US. Even though it is an Italian co-production it would seem to be ineligible for GATT restoration due to being first published in the US.

The claim would be suspect at best

What happens in cases like this where the claim is suspect?
