Forum: forums Subject: PLEASE STOP THE ANIMATED ICONS!!

Yours is a wonderful archive and I am finding much of use in my research. However, the FLASHING, ANIMATED icons drive one batty. Even narrowing the browser window does not hide them.

They definitely limit my use of the site. I'd like to browse a list of found items, but my eyes are inevitably drawn to, or distracted by, the page flashing icons. It's headache producing--and, possibly, for people with certain types of epilepsy, medically dangerous. It certainly is a negative in the handicap accessibility department.

They are, in my humble opinion, of absolutely no use.

Now, perhaps there's a user setting to turn them off. I would appreciate any info on that! But the default should be OFF, not ON!

Thanks for listening!

Where? This site is light years away from a Las Vegas/Tokyo Big Screen as you can get. I've rarely seen any anywhere; except those that are user generated and even they are rare. What are you writing about?

In any list of sources, the item has an icon associated with it that randomly goes through displaying different pages.

Hence, when you end up with a list of a dozen or more items, each one is flashing a non-stop, continuous, rapidly changing page display!

If you are referring to the image on the right of the movie description column that preview scenes from the video, they are helpful to many users.
The images follow a strict size and position template. If seeing them causes you to have a violent reaction, perhaps a strip of opaque paper draped over your monitor would remove the problem.

Personally I don't even notice them anymore. You can disable animated GIFs in Firefox, though. Go to the 'about:config' page and search for 'image.animation_mode'. Change the setting to none.

Now, you're talking-- alas, however, there is no such option! I scrolled down to the bottom of the page and nothing there!

Ooops! OK-- it's not lower-right, but on the right-hand side!!

As to Mr. Cranky, this is about old historical documents, not movies, but at the speed these things flash, I can't see that being much use even for movies.

It's too bad that the default isn't a static thumbnail of the cover page, with an option to turn on more-- at a slower refresh rate. Now, it's all or now-- no thumbnail or irritating flashing.

In any event, appreciate the feedback. That's a big help and makes the site usable!

Hey, Thanks Jeff. That does work better than my suggestion.
Now if there was only a button to hide only the images I find unpleasant.

There's is a setting on the right, bottom of the page, "Turn off thumbnails" that will turn them off.

For example
http://archive.org/search.php?sort=title&;query=%28collection%3ADriveInMovieAds%20OR%20mediatype%3ADriveInMovieAds%29%20AND%20-mediatype%3Acollection%20AND%20firstTitle:D

scroll down and look on the right side and click on "Turn off thumbnails"

Yep, as I posted:

"Ooops! OK-- it's not lower-right, but on the right-hand side!!"

It shows up at the "bottom of the page" only if your search has only a few items in it. Otherwise, it's on the right-hand side!

But no matter, it's there, and I've turned it off!
