The film was registered:
IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. 1934. 11 reels,
sd. Based on the Cosmopolitan magazine
story by Samuel Hopkins Adams.
Credits: Director, Frank Capra; screenplay,
Robert Riskin; film editor. Gene Havlick.
Columbia Pictures Corp.; © 17Feb34;
LP4497.

It was renewed:
IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, a photoplay in
eleven reels by Columbia Pictures
Corp. © 17Feb34; LP4497. Columbia
Pictures Corp. (PWH); 30Jan62,
R290029.

Original prints carry a valid notice, so it looks like it's copyright.

Thank you for your kindness and I am sorry I am late getting back to you on this one. I had to deal with your findings with my other channel members and wanted to get back to you asap after our meeting. Question: Columbia is not Sony. Is there any way to tell if Sony owns this as they claim in my screen shot?

Thanks again for your help, VC. :)

Columbia Pictures has been owned by the Sony Corporation for just over 20 years. Sony brought the company in 1989. In 1991, the parent company "Columbia Pictures Entertainment" formally changed it's name to "Sony Pictures Entertainment".

There is no reason to assume a movie is p.d. because it was released in 1934.

There would be some reason to assume a movie that was released in 1934 and that is sold by distributors of public domain films is p.d.

I did not assume it. It was on PD listings but that could be old info. When the claim came up, I thought it best to post here to pool resources/info. Thanks for your reply.
