UTF-8 fails, ISO-8859-1 works - why? |
Hello,
I uploaded two Finnish 110-year-old Electrical Engineering books to your great database. The first one:
http://archive.org/details/ShkI-ShkJaSenKyttminenValaistukseenJaTyvoimanhas the scandinavian characters (öäå) broken, as you can see. I used the UTF-8 encoding, which was by default enabled by my browser (Firefox 13).
Then (after recognizing the problem) I switched manually to ISO-8859-1 and uploaded the other file:
http://archive.org/details/ShkIi-TelefooniJaSenKyttminenAnd it works great, as you can see.
In the FAQ it says that:
"Archive.org supports all metadata about items in just about any language so long as the characters are UTF8 encoded."
So is there a bug in the browser, or form handling or where it is? :-)
