Just a thought, depending on the book, you could also link to it from Wikipedia, either an external link or footnote. The main reason is links on Wikipedia are valued highly on Google searches, so anyone doing a Google search for the book will find it quickly, since the Wikipedia entry will cause it to rise to the top of the search list. I don't recommend this technique for illegitimate purposes (ie. astroturfing) but for legitimate things it's a good idea, since otherwise you don't have Project Gutenberg (via DP) "marketing" the book.
I did a project for Wikisource years ago. They since changed the rules and now my project is not well cared for there (or even wanted by many). I wish I never had done that project at Wikisource, but hard to move since it's built around Wikisource tools. So understood about the limitations of community projects and instead going it alone.
