12 Hours Dark: Internet Archive vs. Censorship
The Internet Archive believes that it is critical to protest and raise awareness of pending legislation in the United States: House Bill 3261, The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and S.968, the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA).
Archive.org is going dark from 6:00 am – 6:00 pm PDT on Wednesday January 18 (14:00 – 02:00 GMT) to drive a message to Washington. We need your help to do this.
Legislation such as this directly affects libraries (pdf) such as the Internet Archive, which collects, preserves, and offers access to cultural materials. Furthermore, these laws can negatively affect the ecosystem of web publishing that led to the emergence of the Internet Archive.
These bills would encourage the development of blacklists to censor sites with little recourse or due process. The Internet Archive is already blacklisted in China—let’s prevent the United States from establishing its own blacklist system.
For United States residents, please take action.
For non-US residents: Sorry for dragging you into this, and if you are willing, sign a petition to the State Department to express your concern.

Here is the Congressional Switchboard Telephone Number:
1-866-220-0044
Be sure you have your ten-digit zip code so the switchboard can direct your call to the correct congressperson who represents you. You can find your ten-digit zip code on any piece of junk mail that reaches your home.

Re: Archive.org will be dark on Wednesday, January 18 to protest SOPA and PIPA |
> Hey Micah what's that brown shit on your nose?
http://tinyurl.com/8a3m6md> Is IA owned by PBS?
Or do they both have the same marketing team? Let's see.
-Grants up the wazoo.
-Tax payer funding (600K, a drop in the bucket), thank-you Congressman Farr.
-Many good folks that become members and pay dues.
So now we get sloganeering every time we pop on IA that is equivalent to how my local PBS station begs for money. Or used to twenty years ago when I still was a paying member and paid attention.
So things are tight at IA? Maybe prioritize? I loved my hat and swag, but maybe that ought not have been a line item?
Maybe, since my above example was a tiny slice of the budgetary pie chart, some tough choices need to be made. One less library to digitize this year? One less server, and load times may be a second or five slower? Is every employee necessary (gasp) or can benefits be slightly trimmed back for a year or two?
How many fish are you going to catch in the Donate on every page, like a Big Sister reminding you incessantly? Enough? If your projections are that rosy or your shortfall that small why bother (and it is) at all?
So an on-line PBS? Don't be that website IA. There are better solutions to be sure. And it looks desperate and tacky.
> What a complete asshole you are!

You must really like me. I'm flattered. I have my own personal plush toy. Now, don't two time me or I'll stop playing.
The comparison above sadly doesn't fit, if you think. Kinda like leprechauns or trolls, apples or bananas. That darned Congress or free speech.

This is a great idea and, I think, a very effective form of protest to a very stupid bill.
Nit pick: You mean 6am PST, right? PDT is used only in summertime.
