Khan Academy has all their content on archive.org. We are serving it.

Yes, and I think it's great that IA hosts all the videos. But ....... and I've meant to put this up as a review somewhere ...... there are some problems with IA's presentation of it.

For one thing, it's not user friendly. If you look at their main website, it's well-organized by topic: Chemistry, Biology, Calculus, etc. If you look at the IA site (e.g. the link you put up), a user would never have an idea that there WERE a variety of topics, let alone be able to find them. It's just random. That can work if you know which video you're searching for, but you have to know first. Ultimately it would be great to have it more organized.

Also: Is it possible to DL the Khan videos for offline use from IA? They make them available that way from the main site, but it seems you have to DL everything on their site at once -- all gazillion files -- which for someone like me, being in the "third world" with super-slow internet, would take, oh, from now until the next century. It would be GREAT to just be able to go file by file on IA instead. For instance, I'd like to be able to click on a single video, and then another, and so on, and save them to my desktop for later offline use. I've tried clicking and nothing happens.

Of course, it might just be my bad web skills. Tell me if it ought to be DL-ing for me (not for streaming, but for saving to desktop.) If it should be, I'll have to try to figure out why it's not working!

Thanks.

Well, I got the "Ogg video" (whatever that is) to attempt to save. Will see if it works. I've never managed to get the "Mpeg" (whatever THAT is) to do anything at all if I click on it. Apparently no one's home when I ring. The Http list is just, well, perplexing. It has coding. I really am Paleo Lady.

edit: Hey, that actually worked! Amazing. Thanks! (I know, I know. He's shaking his head and saying, "Of course. Duh. Why didn't you just ask your teenager? Or, maybe, a 9-year-old?")

re: Khan videos available from their main site... it seems you have to DL everything on their site at once [2735 video lessons].
I checked this out, since I understand you experience buffering problems when streaming larger files at higher bit-rates. But, I did not have the sorting and d/l problems you've experienced. Learning and Education are extremely valuable. I thank you for bringing this up, and I thank The Archive for storing this collection.

I am able to d/l each lesson, one at a time, from the Khan Academy web site. In the example below, I was able to browse the entire Biology Collection, then I selected one lesson to watch and d/l.

For example: Introduction to Evolution and Natural Selection lesson is here:
http://www.khanacademy.org/video/introduction-to-evolution-and-natural-selection?playlist=Biology

The above 17-minute lesson is a YouTube video item in FLV format (flash video). Try using Mozilla Firefox browser, and the Download Helper add-on (plug-in) to download this single video. The filename is: Introduction_to_Evolution_and_Natural_Selection_Biology_Khan.flv. Saved FLV files play video and audio content just fine in my WinAmp player.
re: Locating specific Khan videos in The Archive's Khan Academy collection
The non-indexed (random) listings of Khan Academy videos on The Archive is because the Uploader used the same Keywords for all 2735 videos: Keywords: Salman Khan; Khan Academy (alpha-numeric sorts will yield 2735 identical results). The sorting then becomes sort by relevance. The video files available to d/l from The Archive are in MP4 format and OGG format. Saved MP4 files play video and audio content just fine in my QuickTime player.

Here's what you can do, if you want to d/l my specific Khan video example from The Archive:

a) First, go to Khan Academy website, locate a Video Lesson you want to d/l from The Archive. Copy the text name of the lesson from here. In this example I've copied the title: Introduction to Evolution and Natural Selection

b) Go to The Archive web site, and visit the Advanced Search Form:
http://www.archive.org/advancedsearch.php

c) Any field: is the first selection in The Advanced Search Form. Make sure contains is selected. Paste your Khan Video Title (that you copied) into the contains text box: Introduction to Evolution and Natural Selection

d) AND collection: is the 5th selection in The Advanced Search Form. Using is text box selection: enter the correct collection name from the drop-down list - khanacademy

e) AND Mediatype: is the 6th selection in The Advanced Search Form. is text box selection: enter the correct mediatype name from the drop-down list - movies

Now do your search. (hit the Search button) IT WORKS!!! Introduction to Evolution and Natural Selection will be the only item listed in this search example, linked for you below:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=%28Introduction%20to%20Evolution%20and%20Natural%20Selection%29%20AND%20collection%3A%28khanacademy%29%20AND%20mediatype%3A%28movies%29

(Sorry, I deleted the thread you've responded to. Use this thread.)

Re: So are you saying that the download helper add-on would allow it to be saved to desktop?
Download Helper is here:
http://www.downloadhelper.net/

What I am NOT saying is, how to use your computer, where and how you save and use files d/l from web sites, and how you organize them on your computer. I AM saying Download Helper does the job.

Yes, I can save d/l video files to my Desktop, when I'm using Download Helper to save FLV flash video lessons from Khan Academy web site.

Thanks. I'm trying the add-on thing, and ... progress report ... it's been going for 20 minutes on the same file and says 19 minutes remaining. How does that compare to your time in the States? (Don't laugh.)

Btw they give two standard DL options, it seems. The tab by the YouTube video that says "download" redirects to the archives, but for me, it just freezes and hangs there. (We typically just buffer and play.) There's also a section of the site called "downloads" that sends you to what seems to be the whole shootin' match in zip form or something.

I mentioned before, when I play my MP4 videos, I use my QuickTime player.

• So, you can d/l and save a given Khan Academy lesson from their website. The source will be the embedded YouTube video, in FLV format, a.k.a. flash video. Use Firefox w/ Download Helper to save this file. The Uploader has allowed permission for this. If the Uploader has NOT granted permission for d/l, notice that Download Helper is disabled. Once you save this file, you can playback on your computer with WinAmp.

• Or, you can d/l and save a given Khan Academy lesson from The Archive. The source will be the mpeg4 video, in MP4 format. I Use Firefox and I right-click to save this file, from the Individual Files / Movie File section. The Uploader has allowed permission for this. Read their Creative Commons permission. Once you save this file, you can playback with Apple's free QuickTime player. Download free QuickTime player for Windows.

For the time being, on my computer, my WinAmp player can't play MP4 files in video mode, just the audio. My FLV files play video and audio fine in WinAmp. So in my case, I'm using QuickTime player for my MP4 playbacks.

I suggest you d/l and install Apple's QuickTime player. Once you have, you can right-click on your Desktop MP4 icon (for the Khan lesson you d/l from The Archive), and select "Open With" from there. Then Choose QuickTime player from there. This will force the MP4 to play back in QuickTime. This is what I'm doing.
