sorry i was trying for something conceptual and failed miserably; however, let me ask you this: can you think of any other baseball players, current or past, who when referenced by their first name, everyone knows who is being referenced?
i mean, when someone says 'Babe' i don't need to hear the 'Ruth' to know who's being discussed
others i can think of:
Reggie
i know that there are a slew of players that you could give their first name, and you'd have a pretty good chance of knowing who is being referenced, for example, you say 'Rusty' i immediately think of Rusty Staub, but then he's the only 'Rusty' of worth, so it's not the same as 'Babe' where even a non-baseball person would have a fairly good idea of who you were talking about
on another note, i didn't know you were the age you are, but that means you never did get the chance to see Dwight Gooden in his prime; he didn't pitch so great against Boston in the '86 series, but he definitely was a reason why the Mets got to the post season, along with the entire starting rotation which was phenomenal; that was one hell of a team, and probably the best all-around team of the 1980s for any team in baseball

ahh yes, the noble Ichiro, i was disappointed by him not getting the gold glove for his 11th consecutive year, but on the other hand, maybe he didn't really deserve it? i don't follow Seattle all that closely, altho i would love to see that team get to the post-season while Ichiro is still on the roster

ichiro had a drop-off in his defensive performance in 2011, so no he didn't really deserve it this year. as for offense, isn't it funny that a guy can hit .272 with 184 hits and 39 stolen bases, and people say he had a terrible year? well by his standards he did have a terrible year, considering he's a .326 lifetime hitter who averages 225 hits and 104 runs per year. the mariners did make it to the alcs in ichiro's rookie season, but i would love to see him get a ring.
next to the babe, #2 has gotta be yogi.
and of course the ny centerfield debate of the '50s with willie, mickey, and the duke
after ichiro, chipper has to be the most recognizable in recent years.

luckily there's footage of him in his prime which i've seen. the '86 mets one one of the greatest teams ever, but man did they like to party. there was a good e60 special on him recently which had some interesting stuff on his the beginning of his cocaine use and what it did to his career. what a shame, he could have been an all-time great pitcher. he clearly had hof talent. 1985 was one of the best statistical seasons ever for a pitcher.

oh yeah, forgot about Yogi, but of course it's a unique name and that will lend itself to being recognizable (on the other hand, Babe is pretty unique as well); and Pedro, yeah i thought about him too (he should have called it quits after '04 and left on top or near the top)
at the time, when i was closely following the team, i wasn't aware of the '86 Mets partying habits, but it's not surprising, and it does admittedly leave somewhat of a stain on the entire season ... have you read 'The Bad Guys Won!' by Jeff Pearlman? Cliff sent it to me awhile back, and it's still sitting in my pile of books to read, but maybe it's time i started it

not to be picky, but some people would also think of hank greenberg, with hank. change it to henry and it can be added to the list. yogi, willie, and the mick were mentioned.
i wouldn't include lou either. my first thought was actually lou brock. joe could be joe jackson. imo the ones i mentioned, there's really only 1 person people could possibly think of. time for a new topic i suppose for the mets fans.

Actually Old Hoss threw underhand from a distance of 45 feet in 1884. His other claim to fame was this photo:
He's the guy in the upper left flipping the bird.
Big Ed Walsh in 1908 is the the all time leader in innings pitched in a season since the mound was moved to its current 60 feet 6 inch distance (464). He also won 40 games that year.

There is actually 2 teams pictured together in this 1886 opening day photo. The left side with the gray hats are the Boston Beaneaters, and the right side players in white are the NY Giants.
The player to the right of the guy in the top hat is John Montgomery (Monte) Ward, the last National League pitcher to throw a perfect game prior to Jim Bunning in 1964 (Ward in 1880).

haha, the ones with no mustache probably couldn't grow facial hair. i'm sure the non-mustached didn't garner much respect amongst teammates.
never read that book you mention but it sounds like a fun read. if you ever get off your lazy keister and decide to read it, let me know if it's worth the time.
