i'll throw in free advice which is worth what you paid for it. i've been playing guitar since 1964. only had a few lessons back then. the main value of lessons imho is to start out with good habits. good finger positioning, picking techniques and so forth. the rest you can do on your own. bad habits are hard to break, trust me i know.

well said. getting lessons when you first start playing is a good idea if you don't have the self-discipline to learn the correct way, which many many players don't. it's natural to try to take shortcuts, but it generally won't help you in learning the guitar. if you learn proper technique, you'll be mighty glad you did once you're able to nail those techniques.
