625,339 downloads

The Centrum on 1987-04-03 is second with 585784

Surely that number is some sort of glitch. If not, that's odd.

I can't believe I just wasted like 10 minutes reading all those ridiculous reviews that always follow an "Islam Sucks/Oh ah um..." rant. I don't post here too too much, but when I do it's usually always in some thread involving some technical debate over a given performance or source. I don't get into the non-dead or political threads or the weird troll/drama crap, but man, it never fails, every time I see one of that guy's rants I always have the same shocked response of "wow, there sure are a lotta crazy assholes in this world these days, I hope this guy doesn't live anywhere near me."

What's up with that? Anyone know what the appeal of this show would be?

I prefer the bookends to that stand, preferably 4/4.
TOG
Althea
Aiko
Box of Rain
Hand Jive
Comes a Time
Promise Land

All very strong versions.

Perhaps the highest energy shows of the late era. This one is generally regarded but arguably the best of the three.

Honestly though I always thought this one was up there because the audience recordings are better for this show than Healy's Ultramatrix sbd recording and so with the policy of no sbd downloads there would be more tendency to check out the great aud's and the shows with good auds would be more likely to make it to the top of the list but obviously this is not the only reason.

Hmmm--I thought it was the RFK by a long shot for a long while. You don't happen to know if it changed dramatically in the past yr or so? Just curious if our fellow Forumites are responsible, or if there is a younger group visiting our (ahem, your) site...

That does seem odd. In Charlie Miller's remastered version, he describes the recording as a crappy soundboard with lots of problems. Oh well, no accounting for taste.

I am not sure those numbers actually represent downloads/streams. I think they represent views. Which is why the most downloaded show for the whole archive has almost 3 million hits. That show was somehow linked to some promotion and was automatically opened when people went to some website or something crazy llike that.

As for the MSG show, i seem to recall it spent a lot of time in the Spotlight Item box in the upper left hand corner of the home page. Shows seem to get a real boost in the views when they are spotlighted. I don't recall that Centrum show ever being in that box. The RFK show was the long time leader of all shows before they split the Dead from the LMA home page.

oops, it was views, it was that if you stream even one song the download counter kicks in. This thread has the explanation.

For what it's worth this was my summary of the download count issue three (count them, three) years ago. I'm guessing it still holds true.

Apologies for not being in touch lately - life has been strange and unsettling and there's no resolution in sight just yet.

Stay well, Larry.

Each source gets its own count. Popular shows with a bunch of competing sources will not rank as high as popular shows with just 1-2 sources.

Germain is correct.

IA's Jeff Kaplan says:

May 13, 2011 - "just so you know... downloads are counted:
only one download per item, per IP, per day.
"

hmmm... Let's try counting all the hits, from all the d/l counters, for all circulating versions, for the top-3 GD shows?

listed as #1 is Grateful Dead Live at Madison Square Garden on 1979-09-04 - 625,339 downloads?

here's the 1979-09-04 boxed set - visit each show on IA, get the d/l count, then add them together. 638,677 total downloads

listed as #2 is Grateful Dead Live at The Centrum on 1987-04-03 - 585,784 downloads?

here's the 1987-04-03 boxed set - visit each show on IA, get the d/l, add them together. 612,350 total downloads

listed as #3 is Grateful Dead Live at RFK Stadium on 06-10-1973 - 570,617 downloads?

here's the 1973-06-10 boxed set - visit each show on IA, get the d/l, add them together. 620,141 sub-total downloads. Add to this 620,141 count - the 24,773 hits from my Our Media Collection version of GD 06-10-73 AUD. actual Grand Total: 644,914

Thanks. Actually, you guys win -- first. Then I came along later, several years after the LMA was launched. That's when I saw all these tapes. All I did was make some casual observations, join some of the Posters on this Forum, and then I added some of my vintage tape recordings.

What I find is, that the farther back in time you go, the better the GD tapes get. Another thing - in my case, this is my 'therapy' - heals my soul.

David Lemieux says about Europe -'72, "The band was hot off of some mainstream success with the country rock albums, ‘Workingman’s Dead’ and ‘American Beauty.’ These are albums with songs like ‘Dire Wolf’, ‘Sugar Magnolia’ and ‘Truckin.’ There was pedal steel guitar on a lot of the songs and you could really hear the country influence. You had this band that by 1972 was clearly showing its country influence, but they incorporated that kind of music into the psychedelic sound which really defined who they were for a lot of people. To me, 1972 was the perfect moment for the Grateful Dead because it embodied everything that they were so great at."

No, there is at least one with more downloads than 6-10-73.

Can you guess??

Even a novice could get this one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some place in New York.

In 1977.

And the winner is with 814,759 downloads.

Excellent pull. Thanks for taking the time to dig up this info. It's funny.

I'm recalling some of Earl B. Powell's raps (and others) about 1977 - especially May shows. I noticed those Sugarees. More recently, I'm recalling another discussion about down-playing the 1977 "over-greatness" ratings. Thankfully, I'm not a "reviewer" here... I'm more of a commentator.

Regardless, I'm still somewhat disappointed that a May, 1977 show skyrockets like this - but, no Sugaree. Anyone know why? Happy Memorial Day Weekend.

Yes those are the most downloaded, due to their position in the spotlighted items. Not in the tops of either 79 or 87 IMHO. There are a few other shows that get undeserved recognition for being spotlighted. 12-16-78 is a mediocre show that people think is as good as sliced bread.

Monte seems to have worked his own petition to avail.
