Is this PD? |
http://www.archive.org/details/Streetfighter_1974Hey all. A user claims this video when downloaded came with a virus that killed his system twice (masochist I suppose).
Do any of you know if it is PD? If not is should come down anyway.
Thanks for the assistance.

Re: Is this PD? |
We'll have to see how this turns out, but I downloaded it, converted it to flv, and posted it to my site with no virus difficulty whatsoever. I used Linux throughout the process, so your mileage may be different, although I doubt it since this item was posted by Moongleam who is scrupulous in both technical and PD matters.
My experience says no virus, no PD issues.

Re: Is this PD? |
Even if we could believe that his system died twice, we wouldn't know that this video was the cause. If there is a virus in the file, then an anti-virus program should detect it and report the name of the virus. Did he use an anti-virus program? What is the name of the alleged virus?
I just checked both the mpeg2 file and the iso file with Avast. No threat or virus was detected.
The page says that 552 people have downloaded the video. Nobody else has reported a virus?
I have uploaded over 100 other videos that were also created with mencoder. Nobody else has ever reported an alleged virus in them.
If this film isn't in the public domain, then all of these should probably be removed as well:
http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=%28title%3A%22street%20fighter%22%20OR%20title%3A%22streetfighter%22%29%20AND%20%28Chiba%20OR%20Shihomi%29%20AND%20mediatype%3AmoviesBecause of these previous uploads and because the movie is available from Dollar-DVD and Mill Creek, I assumed that the film was p.d. Knowing nothing about Japanese copyright law, I could be wrong.

Re: Is this PD? |
I've had virus warning 2 or 3 times when watching/downloading from IA. but I think it was an iframe downloader everytime and it started within the last three months. My antivirus caught it so I just ignored it. Next time I'll note what the problem was and report it

Re: Is this PD? |
The worst thing I've ever happen to me on this site is sometimes I can't compete a download of a particular file or I can't play a file that I've downloaded, but that's very rare, only a very few times out of a year and a half of downloading.
