Re: Extremely slow download speeds |
One thing we can all do to help is send in yearly donations. In the states we have Public Television (in the UK it is the BBC) - IA needs that kind of broad base user support, in addition to the funding it gets from government> and institutions.
I'm not sure archive.org/text message board is the best place to look for technical help (not sure where that would be - since it is mostly volunteers running the site they must have a message base someplace where they co-ordinate and discuss technical operations). I have always had intermittent problems with IA for years, I just eventually came to accept it and be thankful when it works at all (which is not always the case).

Re: Extremely slow download speeds |
Thanks for the info, stbalbach. I understand that the site relies largely on voluntary sources and things don't always run smoothly because everything's stretched to the limit, but that's no excuse for not keeping users informed when problems arise. I notice there is an announcement section, and I don't see why a simple message that the site is experiencing difficulties couldn't be posted there.
I agree that the text forum may not be the best place to post stuff like this, but I really couldn't see any other relevant forum. I also agree that permanent funding of some kind would be ideal, and I don't see why it shouldn't be international funding, rather than just from US sources. The marvellous resources on this site are available internationally, and I think that European governments should also be helping to finance such a worthwhile scheme, as well as individual contributors. I'm sure a few million from each country wouldn't break the bank.

Re: Extremely slow download speeds |
Greetings!
I'm also concerned with this issue, and in addition for donations which are truly useful for other areas of the IA project as well, I really urge the Archive to make use of
available technical solutions which could improve things a bit.
Regards,

Re: Extremely slow download speeds |
This is a good idea (P2P solutions). Duplication is the best form of preservation.
The thought has occurred to me of downloading a copy of every book (half-million or so) but then I did the calculations and it would still be an exspensive proposition - although in 5 years with the cost of disk space going down it won't be so costly for a home user to have a local copy of the entire archive. Another idea, if it could be legally done, would be to sell the archive packaged on a RAID system. This should be a familiar business model for IA.
