From my experience uploading pictures to Wikipedia over the years, anything published before 1923 is public domain. According to Wikipedia:

"Under United States copyright law, all images published before January 1, 1923 in the United States are now in the public domain, but this does not apply to images that were created prior to 1923 and published in 1923 or later. The year 1923 has special significance and this date will not roll forward before 2019."

Wikipedia has a lot of information about how to determine copyright. There is a "help desk" where you can ask questions:

Yes, thanks, Wikipedia's was one of the problematic listings that I found, as it made me worry about if the book maybe was REprinted, would that make it's initial printing date irrelevant?

My main query related to the classification of 'Not in Copyright' on books in this Archive. Does it mean that the book has been confirmed to be Public Domain, for both text AND images? I am just trying to make sure that I step on no toes, and do not have any headaches down the road.

Thanks for listening AND responding.

I think I see what you mean: If you had a pre-1923 E. Nesbit children's book that was (re)published in 1986, with new illustrations by an artist done in 1985, then the illustration rights may be different.

But a lot of the E. Nesbit works you find here would be scans of older printings, with their pre-1923 illustrations. Art in those books would be fine to use.

So sorry I never reponded to your posting Diana Hamilton, I never got my Alert from the Forum that there'd been another post. That was EXACTLY what I was wondering, thanks so much for that relief. :)
