was in northern virginia friday making a pip for women voters and mitt romney has an event planned sunday in virginia's coal country. joining me with what's at stake in virginia is john harwood, cnbc chief washington correspondent. you've seen all those ads, i'm sure, john. but break it down for us, if you can. you know, virginia, a state with two personalities, really. the northern urban suburbs, as john yang was alluding to outside of washington, d.c. then you've got the farming and mining regions. when you look at those, which region will hold the key to victory in november? >> i think the extent to which voters turn out in the northern voting suburbs is his key to victory. about 40% of the vote gets cast in those northern virginia suburbs. and as you heard in john yang's piece, the key to improving democratic prospects in virginia over the last several elections is diversity and suburbanization. the republican strongholds in the rural parts of the state have been growing more diluted as a proportion of the final vote in virginia, and that's why you've had governors like mark warner an

that as almost anything. you see in these polls, repeatedly that romney does much better among likely voters as opposed to registered voters and the pollsters try to ask a series of questions to figure out, are you really going to vote or maybe going to vote? and what they're seeing is stronger enthusiasm for romney and that's why he does better among likely voters. republicans feel that part of that comes out that have debate. >> the impact of the poll, you talked about the gallup poll which some people criticize for showing a seven-point lead but the important thing is it helps republican campaigns, it shows republicans he can win. all these republicans who have doubted, he hasn't won a great campaign, president al -- suddenly looking at this campaign saying, hey, this could work. maybe we need to go out and do more. >> you see that at romney's rallies where he shows up and they explode in a way that usually hasn't been associated -- gwen: i heard in north carolina there were record lines to early vote this time, even more so than last time. >> the other side of that coin is there's opport

voters shows governor romney with a six-point lead over president obama. this poll was tied at 48% as recently as the 9th of this month. a rasmussen reports poll of 11 swing states has governor romney up 49% to 47%. president obama losing his six-point octoberr4th lead in the process. the favorability rating showing a candidate in governor romney who is now likable to a majority of american voters. the pew research center showing governor romney's favorable rating at 50% to the president's 49. a stunning turn around from march when the president's rating was nearly twice that of governor romney's. brand new fox poll in the important battleground state of florida has romney outpacing the president 55% to 51% in the favooables. the gallup favorability poll has the republican nominee on top as well. mr. romn beating the president 52-51%. incredibly, the left-leaning public policy institute giving governor romney the biggest lead in likability. the goveor up three percentage points on the president in that, in that poll which is co-sponsored by the service employees international unio

to the rasmussen daily tracking poll, among likely voters, mitt romney now leads the president by two points. also gallup daily tracking has romney up by 4 points, the largest lead the governor has in that poll. and the swick states are also trending toward governor romney. in new hampshire, now a tie in the suffolk poll. in iowa according to the arg poll it's also a tie. in pennsylvania quinnipiac says president obama leads by 4 but he was up by 12 about three weeks ago. so you can see that all over the u.s.a., mitt romney is surging while the president is having problems. thus, thus, tonight's debate takes on a huge importance. as does its town hall format. there will be about 13 questions asked by the regular folks who were selected by the club agency. the moderator cnn correspondent candy crowley will then ask follow-up questions. the candidates will have six minutes to address each situation. questions can be anything but they have been vetted. ms. crowley knows what the questions are. apparently nobody else does, we hope that's the case anyway. president obama will most likely try to convinc

obama is losing ground. he now leads governor romney by just three points among likely voters, down from seven points last month. and in florida, governor romney is leading within the margin of error, 48 to 45%. just last month the president was leading by five points. big shifts. the critics are saying president obama needs to be more specific about what he would actually plan to do in a second term. charlie herd joins me now. he's a columnist for the washington times. great to have you here. happy sunday morning. >> great to be with you, jamie. >> they must really be prepping. the question is when they step on the stage for this debate, will the president be more specific about what a second term would actually mean? >> well, you know, it's really sort of a catch-22 for president obama in that regard because i think that much of what he's going to -- if he were to be honest about what he's going to do in a second term, he's done in the first term. in recent weeks mitt romney and paul ryan have both been very effective at attacking president obama on that count. they're just saying look

the president running far ahead of mitt romney among female voters. in fact, different picture here, look at the nationwide polls and obama is still leading romney among women by seven points or more. what accounts for this jump toward romney among women in the 12 swing states, any clue? >> it is hard to answer that without getting what they say -- they call in the business cross tax, the inside numbers in gallup polls to be able to know why the women who said that they are more supportive of mitt romney said that, whether it is his economic positions, whether it was his performance on the debate or something else. but what i can tell you is that other polls also talking about -- or talking to voters in swing states are, you know, less favorable to mitt romney and still is a pretty big gender gap, even in swing states, in the washington post poll and the politico, george washington university poll. but it is important to point this out because gallup is -- didn't just start polling yesterday. they are reputable polling organization. and it has become a little bit of a football between the
