romney's economy. the story of the romney economy can be told with 200 jobs here in this small town of illinois, freeport. now, it's important to know, i think how all of this happened. we're going to tell that story tonight. it's important to understand the plea coming from the community to stop it. this is your new america, unless you do something about it. we came here to broadcast outside the sensata auto parts plant here in freeport. sensata closed the doors of the plant for the entire weekend. the entrances are barricaded. workers were told not to report. none of these workers will report to the factory when it closes in december. those jobs, they're headed a long way away. a place called china. we have a huge conversation going on in this country right now about jobs. the guy who wants to take the president of the united states' job, barack obama, mitt romney's job, it's all about what is happening right here in america. today, the president said, mitt romney is trying to forget how his economic policies benefit the very rich like the owners of this factory. >> he's forgettin

on the economy. romney had the edge. who seemed like the stronger leader romney had the edge. when you ask who won the debate, and asking them where it leads them in terms of their vote are two different things. >> eliot: it's not clear which of those questions are causally linked to the vote. the president tried to do cross-examination on the governor last night, on the issue of the 8 trillion-dollar he calculated 8 trillion-dollar in costs in additional spending by romney. and governor romney has not given us any answers about how he's closing that huge gap, that chasm. can he do that throughout the rest of the campaign. >> i think president obama and democrats are hammering governor romney and paul ryan about that because it is a kind of remarkable thing. they're saying we're going to give everybody marginal tax break cut. be marginal, and we won't tell what you the loops holes are. some of the only loopholes that get through, those are hugely popular deductions. if you did away with them, they would have very negative affects in other ways. i can't see how this math works. >> eliot: he has

is that even if people think that mitt romney might be better fothe economy, barack obama is so likeable, he will always do better than mitt romney on likability, and contrary to what mort says, i economy is in absolute shambles, but, again, the path to 270 electoral votes, it is much stronger on barack obama on demographics thec it is for mitt romney on the economy. >> what did you think of the electrifying performance in the first debate? >> i think he was absolutely abyss mal in the first debate a the pathto >>> fast, two weeks from tuesday, who's going to win? >> who wins ohio wins. >> president obama. >> obama. >> obama can't keep a job when so many people have lost paeirs. >> .

that on the economy romney on the economy was the clear winner last night. so, where do we stand? we'll just throw it around the table here first and trying to figure out where the race will go after last night. we saw a movement in the last two weeks toward romney. my question is, what was the source of that noouchlt? were these people who all year looking for an excuse to re-elect obama? they liked him personally and thought he came in under tough circumstances and wanted to give him more time and just so disheartened by the performance in denver? i think they got reassurance and they'll like obama. were they looking for an excuse to vote out obama and mitt romney wasn't giving them that excuse. they just didn't feel comfortable enough? if that's the kiss and romney gave them a comfort level in the first debate, i don't think he won last night and probably competent enough a performance to keep the vote earls in the fold for him. >> interesting to see how the polls shift based on this debate. what i thought looking at that clip from libya, you're the president's best line of the night, please pr

the last debate's on foreign policy. we need to get back to the economy. i think mitt romney, for example, would be a lot smarter to try to talk about china and see if he could connect that to jobs issues here in the u.s. he's not going to make progress on this libya issue. he just qualified himself -- >> we'll see, bob. >> hold on, hold on. i've got to ask michael steele about this. what about the president's response about the very next day in the rose garden, he talked about an act of terror? i mean, are we -- that doesn't qualify? >> no, no, it does qualify, but then the question, this gets into the nuance and the semantics of what the president was referring to when he said that. is he specifically talking about this event in benghazi, or is he talking more broadly -- i read the transcript, and for my interpretation, he was not -- eight paragraphs later -- >> actually, two sentences are right next to each other. he said, acts of terror are unacceptable. the killing of our people in benghazi will be the people who will be brought to justice. why would he -- >> i did read it. >> why --

and romney laid out, i think, a very good indictment on the economy. he's very effective at making that point and stressing that point. folks, the voters sided with romney 2 to 1 in the cnn poll afterwards. so that is, that is a nice setup for the last debate. the point i was going to make on libya -- >> sure. >> is it was awkward, it was mishandled, but the reality of it is, going into a debate that the last debate only on foreign policy, it opened up a lot of questions that the moderator can dig down on. the president's going to have to be on point on. there's going to be a timeline that's going to be discussed. and trust me, whether schrum, the democrats and the president does not want to be having this discussion about the ins and outs about what happened in libya two weeks before an election. >> bob, what about that? so i think that there is an opportunity there for romney to stress these points. >> this is neocon nonsense. >> okay. >> the fact of the matter is that the republicans somehow have the illusion that they can make the case that this president has been weak on foreign policy o

they deserve. >> this is the big mega theme that romney is developing, focused on the economy, nationally based, not regionally based. i thought that was his most effective answer in that debate. >> oh, i did, too. i think it was the megaissue. i think that fellow put his finger right on it. how can we relate my economic life, my daily life, to what's going on in the larger economy? and president obama virtually had nothing to say to him. by the time he was done, he was talking about ending the war in iraq and killing bin laden. >> don't forget, but 100,000 -- >> right. >> the romney critique, the litany of obama broken promises that he went through, that was the best part of the debate. i would like to see romney do a little more explaining why liberating the economy, simplifying the tax code, creates jobs, a little bit more about why freedom works better than the government. in terms of knocking down the obama's claims, and he correctly pointed out that the obama has cut energy production on federal lands, and he scored. >> it's interesting to me that the romney campaign has this large nation

that romney has put all his money on for the last two years has been about the economy. the reason ohio is doing so much better for this president and for democrats in general is because of the economy. the president actually has a good economic story to tell right now. he's been burdened by expectations. obviously, there's a lot of people out there looking for work. but the bigger trend in the election isn't about debate performance or the latest ad. it's about rising economic confidence. we're seeing it across the board and in the president's approval numbers. so he needs to be forceful not just about mitt romney, but about how far this country has traveled in four years. >> we're seeing the good numbers and the trends and also the denial coming from the conservatives. great to have you with us. remember to answer tonight's question. share your thoughts on twitter @edshow and on facebook. >>> a romney adviser runs into trouble trying to sell the lies to fox news. you know there must be a problem. ted strickland joins me for the the conversation. stay with us. then new activia breakfas

picture of who and what mitt romney's economy is all about and what he really cares about. what's happening in freeport, illinois, is about greed. it's about turning a profit at the expense of hard working americans and families who are suffering because of this decision. mitt romney has done this his entire life and now it's catching up to him. no matter how hard he tries to spin the facts, this is who he really is. what's happening to the workers in illinois is the economic model mitt romney believes in. by the state of our campaign here. i think governor romney focusing on the economy, focusing on what he would do to help get more jobs for the people of florida and people across the country. also, focusing on debt, focusing on deficits, focusing on the gas prices that so many floridians are seeing every single day at the gas pump and how that's affecting their bottom line. i think right now there's a lot of anxiety amongst the american people, particularly people here in florida, about the state of the economy. and as governor romney has focused on that, and he's focused on what he would do better over the next four years, versus the failed policies that we've seen over these past four years from president obama, our campaign has done very well here. and we feel very good about where we're positioned here right now. >> well, i agree with kevin that it is very close. you know, some polls have the president five up, some have the-- some polls have the governor five up. but we've invested in this state. we have more than 100 campaign offices across this state. we believe in our ground operation

. watching the view last night. when you get down to specifics. who would better handle the economy. romney 38% and obama 48%. who would handle taxes better? clear, very large wins there for mitt romney on every specific about anything economic as far as a debate watching poll. that has to worry you doesn't it? >> it doesn't worry me piers because i saw a whole bunch of data and most of those were undecided voters people who were still making up their minds ip th in the election. and many of whem have made up their minds already. among the people who watched the debate, the president had a clear advantage and he should. here governor romney offers his tax plan still with no plausible way to pay for it. he threw out his idea last night and it is the same sketchy deal the president talked about in the debate. and the president was very, very specific about steps we could take to continue to improve our economy and it is improving. mitt romney talked about his view about how the president formed last night. i think it isn't anything that the president still doesn't have an ajegenda for a secon

it will be good for our economy and for job creation. now, governor romney has a different philosophy. he was on "60 minutes" just two weeks ago and he was asked is it fair for somebody like you making $20 million a year to pay a lower tax rate than a nurse or bus driver, somebody making $50,000 a year? and he said "yes, i think that's fair." he said "i think that's what grow it is economy." well, i fundamentally disagree with that. i think what grow it is economy is when you get that tax credit that we put in place for your kids going to college, i think that grow it is economy. i think what grow it is economy is when we make sure small businesses are getting a tax credit for hiring credit vance for who fought for our country, that grows our economy. so we have a different theory. and when governor romney stands here after a year of campaigning, when during a republican primary he stood on stage and said "i'm going to give tax cuts--" he didn't say tax rate cuts, he said tax cuts to everybody including the top 1%. you should believe him. because that's been his history. and that's exactl

voters gave higher marks to governor romney on the economy so he is focusing today on bread and butter issues, jobs and the economy and noting that while president obama has been highly critical of governor romney's plans for the economy he doesn't have much on the table himself. >> it is interesting that the president still doesn't have an agenda for a second term. don't you think it is time for him to put together a vision of what he would do in the next four years? he has to come up with that over the weekend because there is only one debate left. monday. >>reporter: the rnc had an ad that is a mock version of obama's second agenda, an empty binder. >>shepard: and a binder full of women is instantly trending on twitter. have they followed up on the binder full of women comment. >>reporter: the governor is take fire on that today from women's group in massachusetts claiming, wait, he didn't ask for a binder full of well qualified women to put in his cabinet. we gave him that binder but it is interesting to note that the governor made it quite cheer he wanted to put more women in the

something about the romney folks during this campaign. when the economy starts looking up, they start looking a little down in the mouth. they just can't admit the economy is getting better. >> when president obama came into office, he did inherit a tough situation. problem is, he made things worse. >> president obama made the economy worse? what planet are these guys living on? this is the same old talking point that mitt romney had so much trouble with earlier in the campaign. remember how he couldn't decide whether the economy was getting better or not? >> when he took office, the economy was in recession and he made it worse. and he made it last longer. >> he didn't create the recession. >> he did not cause the recession but he made it worse. >> i didn't say that things are worse. >> is that a hard argument to make, okay, he inherited this recession and took a bunch of steps to try to turn the economy around and now we're seeing more jobs but vote against him anyway? >> have you got a better one, laura? because this happens to be the truth. >> you're right, governor. it just happe

for hiring veteran who is fought four our country, that grows the economy. when governor romney stands here during the campaign, when during the republican primary he stood on stage he said i'm going to give tax cuts, not tax rate cuts, tax cuts to everybody in the top 1%. you can believe him because that's his history. we want a strong middle class and an economy that's striving for everybody. governor romney? >> you heard what i said about my tax plan, the top 5% will continue to pay 60% as they do today. i'm not looking to cut taxes for wealthy people. i am looking to cut taxes for middle income people. why do i want to bring rates down and at the same time lower exemptions and deductions particularly for people at the high end. because when you bring rates down, it makes it easier for small businesses to keep more of their capital and hire people. for me this is about jobs, i want to get america's economy going again, 57% of americans work in small businesses. for me, i look at what's happened in the last four years and say this has been a disappointment. we can do better than this. we

the administration handled it. >> reporter: governor romney talked about the economy and accused obama of failing to keep his promises. >> he said he would cut in half the deficit. he hasn't done that either. >> reporter: joe biden says romney is leaving out the details. >> there is not a single specific in the romney $5 trillion tax plan. >> reporter: representatives for both campaigns continued the attacks. >> what governor romney wants us to do is get back to the policies that got us in the mess. >> the president has no plan. he did not layout a plan. >> reporter: both sides ready for a race. while president obama is in iowa and ohio today, governor romney will campaign in virginia. both candidates have less than a week to prepare in florida where the focus is on foreign policy. danielle leigh, nbc news. >>> thank you. have you ever wondered where a google search takes place? scott mcgrew does here this herf the secret tech center. >> google has launched that web site to show off. here is where your google question goes to server farms like this one. one blogger said it reminded him of "the ma

at the issues, like the economy and health care and taxes and deficit and leadership, he kills. romney wins on the issues how does that work? >> it tells you something that in a situation like we are in now, any plausible republican should be ahead by seven or eight points, and the reason that it is tough to beat an incumbent president is you have to have someone to take his place when romney went through the problems everyone has heard that before. what he did not come up with is a single, single, single answer to what he would do. i thought the best moment was when obama said we don't have a plan, and romney had some good moments but rebound came back and he had him on the defense all night long. >> that is why he is doing poorly, the real president obama came back and in all of the key areas, those areas that matter, romney was ahead in all of them including with women, and i thought that the interrupting of each other and of the moderator against both the candidates, 28 times interrupted romney and only nine times obama, something has got to change at the next commission. they should lo

's not the kind of advocacy that women need in any economy. >> the president hit romney on the economy, on his tax plans, on immigration, and the ninth inning grand slam on romney's comments on that 47%. did he do enough to arrest the trend lines in the polls which have been moving toward governor are m? big question. let's look at this snap poll just after the debate after cbs. 37% said obama won, 30% gave it to romney, and 33% said it was a tie. a cnn poll said 46% of watchers called this for obama versus 39% for romney. did obama re-energize his party? i'm joined by howard fineman and joy reed and steve schmidt. steve schmidt, you're a great guy. you are a good sport. and i really do think you called this pretty much as any smart guy would. so tonight how could two men be so different in two weeks? romney was a b version of what he was two weeks ago. obama was d version two weeks ago compared to this. how could somebody change so much. >> it's remarkable. i remember the debate in 2004 with president bush where we entered that first, the real politics had president bush ahead of john kerry. and

poll came out. the economy shows romney won tonight and for more analysis we head back to las vegas to check in with our own frank flunts and his group of undecided swing state voters. they're at one of my favorite places. the wynn, las vegas. you're being nice to everybody there. i'm proud of you. >> thank you f anyone wants to participate there are several more coming up. >> and you've heard that cbs has two to one. how many of you thought barack obama won this debate? raise your hand? how many of you thought mitt romney won? i want to show you the red line represents republicans and green light, democrats on the issue of taxes barack obama performed well. let's take a look. then i'm going to ask why romney had advantage on tax policy. >> i want to bring the rates down, simplify the tax code and get middle income taxpayers to have lower taxes. the reason is because middle income taxpayers have been buried. you've seen incomes go down per family if gas prices have gone up. health insurance up $2500. food prices up. utility prices up. middle income families have brn bn crunched so w

states. brand new fox polling. growing momentum on governor romney on the economy particularly in the important state of the florida. we ask voters who they trust. and a whopping 50 percent of the respondants chose mitt romney compare tod 43 percent for the president. that is it a major turn around which had president obama leading. we asked ohio and here are thoyce numberings. -- numbers. the lead is far smaller than it was in september. a sign of momentum for governor romney's campaign. the over all health of the economy and jobs market is a key deciding factor for undecided voterss and in ohio and florida we asked them if the economy is geth better, worse or staying the same. 5-point margin they say the economy is improving and in florida they say it is getting worse. we get word that the unemployment rate in several battle ground state is falling. ohio has seen a rise in job creation and there is it a lot of the cover in the state. and we'll look at the numbers that we are poling at fox news. for the undecided voters and the entire nation, a final look at the candidates goi

's comes to who can handle the economy best, mitt romney is leading in florida. it matches his margin, seven points actually, goes well beyond that margin, and explains a great deal about his popularity here. not the case in ohio where the president has a slight advantage, both if the fox poll as well as who can best handle the economy. that dominated the debates up until this point, gave mitt romney the first boost in his widely acclaimed victory in the first debate, but hasn't pushed the needle in the last two debates, the vice presidential and second presidential debate. the next one is foreign policy. you can bet that mitt romney and the moderator bob schaeffer will questions about libya, and israel will be a big issue, and the relationship that the u.s. has with the jewish state. on a trip earlier this year, mitt romney made a quite to do about his longstanding relationship with benjamin netanyahu, characterizing it much stronger than president obama, who mr. romney throwing mr. netanyahu under bus, and refusing to have a meeting, etc. president obama has met with benjamin netany

. on the issue of the economy that there are people polled governor romney won 58-40. >> that must have come from his answer to that africa american fellow said things have been rough. and that i believe mitt laid out the record the administration without interruption this is his best response of the night. i think that drove the message home as well as mitt said, any time this year. >> cbs has another poll in which the president obama is the winner says 37% president obama. >> that says it's about six rounds for obama. other five were even? that is right. >> what i didn't like is that it's like two camps had no regard for the question. they weren't addressing the yeses. -- questions they're busy fighting with each other. >> and they did get across the fact they do not like each other. >> when you look at romney hooking at him it was contentious. this is the most contentious debate they ever had telling me things about these two they believed deeply they don't like each other and don't like each other's philosophy. they did not hide their emotions. >> this wasn't like they're interested in answer

, that is t going to work if we want an economy that is thriving for everyone. >> gov. romney, i'm sure you have a reply. >> the top 5% will continue to pay 60% and i am not looking to cut taxes for wealthy people. why do i want to bring rates down and at the same time lower exemptions? if you bring rates down, it is easy for small business to keep their capital and hire people. for me, it is about jobs. i want to get the economy going again. they arerkers -- able to hire more people. i look at the last four years and say this is a disappointment. we don't have to settle for 541 months of unemployment over 8%. the are 3.5 million more women in poverty than when he took office. my five-point plan does it. energy independence. opening trade in latin america, cracking down on china. balancing the budget and fixing training programs and championing small business. i spent my life in the private sector. i know why jobs go. they come from the policies of this president. >> mr. president, the governor says he won't allow the top 5% to have a tax cut. that it will all even out. he wants to give that to

that romney's position was bad for jobs in ohio, michigan, and bad for the american economy. >> jennifer: i think it's so funny--not funny, it's offensive and funny therefore that he would do it, weird that he would do it, that he keeps going back to the auto bailout as though it was his idea when people at least in those states know very well that he wanted to let it go bankrupt. the polls after the debate called the president the winner. those snap polls they're just a snapshot which is why they're snapshots but do they reflect what we're going to see in the traditional polls in a couple of days? >> not necessarily unfortunately, i hope they will, but the reality is there is a difference between winning the debate on one hand and people voting for you on the other. they can decide that you won the debate but not vote for you. the president first was very strong. he took some of the false vene er off of romney. that was important. this race, we talked about it before, when this race is about barack obama he does less well. from the first debate to this one, it has been about barack obama a

economy. mitt romney knows it's not wall street you have to worry about. it's sesame street. ( laughter ) ( applause ) ( cheers ) >> jon: so we're not moving on. ( laughter ) that's pretty hard hitting. you know the most damning line in thattade. >> i'm barack obama and i approve this message. >> jon: why? what is the use of having a superpac if they don't give you plausible deniability. you're going with the big bird pie, still? ( laughter ) you know what's going to happen next? >> this new ad that's come out from the obama campaign, let me play it for you this morning. i'd love your reaction, here it is. >> mitt romney taking on our enemies, no matter where they nest. >> i'm not even sure what the question is, senator, but i'm-- ( laughter ) i guess i am just asking-- >> i don't, either. ( laughter ). >> jon: that ad allowed john mccain, john mccain allowed him to laugh at you. ( laughter ) to laugh at you for using a cartoonish, child-like figure to invigorate your campaign. that's mccain who was saying that. ( applause ) that's got to hurt. but haters gonna hate, right? hater's g

matthews with highlights. >> reporter: governor romney focused on the economy. >> we have not made the progress we need to make. i put together a five point plan that gets america 12 million new jobs in 2004 years and rising take-home pay. >> reporter: the president focused on romney. >> he doesn't have a five point plan he has a one point plan to make sure folks at the top play by a different set of rules. >> when you bring rates down small businesses are able to keep more money and hire more people. >> reporter: the president went after him again. >> you wouldn't have taken such a sketchy wheel and neither should you the american people. -- >> reporter: the president stumbled on the attack at benghazi. >> who denied enhanced security and why? >> reporter: he never answered, taebgd romney. >> while we were still dealing with our dip hats being threatened governor romney put out a -- press release trying to make political points. >> it was clear this was not a demonstration this was an attack by terrorists. >> reporter: he overstepped by challenging the president's assertion that h

see jobs 38% and the economy 37% as the two most important issues facing men. romney is now within one point of obama among female likely voters in swing states 48%-49%. >> mostly with this poll out that shows women this swing states and women voters rank abortion and rights can romney maintain his surge. >> absolutely. the economy which is driving this election. we cannot settled for president obama's failed policies. >> i think that the surge can stop if the president and other democratic candidates get on message about what the republican plan is concerning these issues. >> and i think that more that romney continues to talk about how the failed economics of obama are hurting women and his plan to help women and families, he will continue to surge and win. >> both candidates have t recogni tha votes are important. the women vote was exponential in 2008. it comes down to knowing that women's votes are important and should be counted. >> and this year, we have seen attention on the women's vote like we have never seen before. how is it though that women who are seven to 15 points for

from deficits to a surplus. it will be good for our economy and job creation. governor romney has a different philosophy. he was on "60 minutes" just two weeks ago. he was asking, is it fair for somebody like you, making $20 million a year, to pay a lower tax rate than a nurse, a bus driver, someone making $50,000 a year? he said, i think that is fair. he said, i think that is what grows the economy. i fundamentally disagree with that. i think what grows the economy is when you get that tax credit we put in place for your kids going to college. i think that grows the economy. i think what grows the economy is when we make sure small businesses are getting a tax credit for hiring veterans. that grows our economy. we have a different theory. when governor romney stands here, after a year of campaigning, when, during a republican primary, he stood on stage and said, i will get tax cuts, not tax rate cuts, tax cuts, to everybody, including the top 1%, you should believe him. that has been his history. that is exactly the kind of top-down economics that will not work if we want a stron

issue from the romney's campaign perspective is jobs and the economy. when you look at those numbers, it tell its a story. when asked who would hold -- who would do a better job handling the economy, mr. romney now has a 7 point advantage over barack obama. that is consequential. there is only one more debate and it's on foreign policy, so it may not effect how that number gets looked at next week when we enter the final two weeks of this race. and then, when you skip up to ohio, the battleground state where the candidates have spent more time than anywhere else, the same is true mr. obama a lead within the margin of era. in the last 18 months even before the margin very close to one another in the polls, after the big foreign policy debate on monday night, there will be two weeks left and in all likelihood the same thing. >> shepard: that debate three days away and not surprisingly crucial state of florida. >> this is a debate that both campaigns have been waiting for that final opportunity for the big big audience. 50, 60 million people have watched the debates thus far. they recog
