from a second obama administration or a first romney administration. joining us in our discussion is john kneuer. he used to be the administrator of telecommunications under the george w. bush administration and ed paisley is also with us a long time journalist. he's currently vice president for editorial for the center for american progresses action fund. and mr. paisley tbb we could start with you. how would you describe president obama's overall philosophy when it comes to tech and communications issues? >> guest: i would include tech communications in science. i think all three go together. i think it's -- one from the other or two from the other. the overall philosophy is trying to figure out the best way in which the federal government can work cooperatively with the private sector in improving u.s. competitiveness. and the administration did a number of different public private partnership in a lot of arena trying to boost our science and innovation capabilities. as a broad philosophical focus for what he thinks of as progressive agenda to help boost our economic -- around

in the streets, i think we will see a different kind of obama administration in the second term. tavis: you are not the first person that has said that he might be a differently if he gets a second term. i asked what in his backstory, what in his record, what in his life gives you reason to believe that he will respond to a progressive push? >> i think the best example of that was during the health-care debate. it looked like the president had given up, and all of a sudden, the folks were out there protesting in front of insurance companies, going over to the homes of c.e.o.'s, getting themselves arrested, and i think the president got a backbone as a result of that, and i think that is how we got health-care reform passed in 2010. people who believe that -- i think it was unrealistic. i think the history of this country is that when there is pressure from progressive, grass roots organizations, there are allies of the progressive movement regardless of what is going on in the streets, but i think president obama is going to read what is going on in the country and will respond to pressure.

that the obama administration ignored a rapidly deteriorating security situation in libya. ambassador stevens wrote this cable in august. the absence of significant deterrence has contributed to a security vacuum that is being exploited by independent actors. what we have seen are not random crimes of opportunity but rather targeted and discriminate attacks. but obama's administration officials are saying that the documents don't tell the whole story. they also say the release of the unedited e-mails could endanger the lives of the libyans working with the u.s. >>> there is a tense situation going on right now off the coast of israel. overnight israeli soldiers stormed a ship headed for its coast. passengers say they were trying to break the sea blockade of gaza that's been in effect since 2007. sara sidner is in israel at the port where the ship is actually headed. good morning. what happens to the ship and the people aboard once it does arrive there? >> reporter: randi, at this point in time what we know is just a couple hours ago, the israeli military did end up boarding the board called t

-- three years of the bush administration versus three years of the obama administration, offshore permits were cut by 60 -- were cut, i'm sorry, by more than 1/3. wait a second. i've got that wrong. by 62%. that's what i meant. 62% from 2006 in 2009, there were 995 new wellw8eo[:รท permitn the first three years of the obama administration, 374 new well permits, a 62%=f cut in permits. as far as onshore permits were concerned, it was a cut by a third. the last three years of the bush administration, 20,000 federal drilling permits. the first three years of the obama administration 12,800. so romney was basically right, that there was a major cut in permits onshore and offshore. in terms of overall in the debate, my feeling was, you know, if you favored one guy or another, you had plenty of proof. i thought romney's best moments were as before it mentioned when he was laying outs the -- brit was laying out the litany, the record of the obama administration, on unemployments, on debt, on poverty, on median income. i thought obama's best moments were when he basically said romney favors the r

, the obama administration imposed tariffs on tires imported from china and last month the administration very quietly left that tariff expire. after one study says that that tariff preserved maybe about 1200 american jobs at a cost of $1.1 billion. that would be $900,000 per job. now, those numbers could be overstated. even significantly overstated. but what's absolutely true is that any tariff we put on any product in this country is paid not by the country that produces the product. it is paid by american consumers when they purchase that product. tariffs are simply sales taxes on american consumers and that's why tariffs are almost always self-defeating. so if a president wants to get tough with china and slap some heavy tariffs on chinese products, the question for that president is very simple. mr. president, tell us exactly what products you want to make much more expensive for american consumers. and presidents look at that menu of choice and wisely choose none of the above. mitt romney likes to pretend that he's the only candidate who cares about chinese currency manipulation. america

of the assassinations, he went to vegas to campaign. we now know the cia told the obama administration early on what happened in benghazi was an organized terror attack. yet the president would not hold a press conference and say that. instead, as u.n. ambassador and his press spokesperson openly mislead the public. why? it makes no sense. and even now mr. obama remains nebulous, foggy about the entire situation. so here's the deal. hold the press conference, mr. president. lay everything out there. if mr. obama fails to do that over the weekend, mitt romney has a huge opportunity with the foreign policy debate coming up on monday. we need answers. romney should demand them. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight. new polling after the second debate. gallup now has romney beating the president 51% to 45% nationwide. that's got to make the governor feel good. rasmussen has it a dead heat, however. 48% for both. the real clear politics average nationally has the electoral college pretty much tied now. in the key state of wisconsin, nbc news has mr. obama up by 6 points. however, rasmussen

two years of the obama administration where with control in the house, the senate, and the white house consolidated in one party, they did things where you can look back and say, boy, there are some flaws and weaknesses in the affordable care act or in dodd frank, but they muscled them through. once the house was lost, that effort to begin to muscle things through went awry and you didn't have the same effort being made in the senate as you did before. i just think you have got to get -- we got to get the election behind us, that is inevitable, there is no session until that happens. once it does, what is really important to understand is that there is a lot of weakness economically around the world today. i think the c.e.o.s of some of the largest american companies look at this and say this is an opportunity for america, but not an opportunity that's to be taken for granted, not one that is assured. it's an opportunity and you have to act and you have to seize it and that means you do have to deal with, i think, the long-term fiscal problems. you certainly have a tax structure in the

terrorist attack by trained and rehearsed goon squads, but the reluctance of the obama administration to recognize terrorism as terrorism is a pattern because only in obamaland was the fort hood workplace incident despite the fact that the shooter shouted jihaddist slogans even as he pulled the trigger. he had long standing correspondence with known facilitators of islamic terror, and whose targeted violence on a military post wleas anything but random. and to this day the obama administration has refused to acknowledge what the actual shooter in the little rock sass nailings of a -- assassination of a young soldier himself declared and that is that he carried out that shooting as an act of jihad. governor romney need not get sucked into the vortex of a word game as to the meaning of a single ut rans o utterance on ay over a single incident. the question which the president has yet to answer, largely because nobody has bluntly posed it to him, is this. do you believe that america and americans are threatened by an ongoing radical islamic jihad that is at its heart irrational and inten
