? >> andrea: one, they miscalculated. "they" being the obama campaign, the priorities of women. they talk about birth control and abortion and other things when the economy is the number one issue. they try to scare women away from romney. that night romney showed up and women said wait, he's not an evil guy. wow! he is smart. respectful and nice. that follows with joe biden arrogant off the jerk marhchisom attitude and now we are seeing what they call the waitress moms. this election depends on the waitress moms. who are waitress moms. i grew up in the diner with the same women. they are concerned about the economy and swing voters. >> dana: what else they care about is welfare reform and whether or not there are changes in the welfare reform requirements. we have a treat that we have you on "the five" and tomorrow morning you will be on "fox & friends." in the debate, how long in the debate before you know, have a sense of what tomorrow morning will look like? >> brian: i'm cheating because i'm watching twitter. i'm cheating and i will admit. that we'll know in an hour in if the preside

adjunct professor. since president obama says he is standing for the rights of women, i support him on that issue. it agreed to me when -- it grieved when candidate rawness of 46 -- 47% of the people -- candidate romney said 47% of the people did not matter. when he said that we were written off, i worked and the money went to social security and that's what i am relying on. even now, the money that we use is for medication and to take care of my husband and daughter. it was very offensive the way romney stood and disrespect to the position of our president at the debate. host: were you for president obama before those comments? caller: ask, i was. i have already made up my mind. in our paper locally, it states that went romney stated he was with women with the binders, a phone conference was made to the young lady who brought the binder. it was them went to romney and asked him if he would put more cabinet women in his cabinet in 2002. host: that is in the newspapers this morning and we will read more about that. we'll go to run a supporter in south carolina. -- a romney supporter

." now, when women, a senior staffer went to president obama to complain about rahm e emanues attitude towards women, his rough manner, obama's response was, look, i really need rahm. that was the response. as the environment deteriorated, obama got the women staffers together to have a dinner with them to address the concerns. okay. the meeting began with obama looking at his watch and saying, are there concerns i need to know about? that's how concerned he was. i wish your expressions could be seen out there. again and again, ignored the concerns of women. he ignores the concerns of women who are going to be affected negatively by obamacare, all of the taxes that are going to hit the middle class, the medicine cabinet tax, limitations on what we put in the flex spending thes, but it is also the sheer way in which obama patronized women that is so offensive and belies what complete hypocrisy the war on women is. camp damp bell brown, a former cnn anchor, had a great piece on how paternal this administration has been towards women making reference to how women a smarter than men, all s

that tonight is all about suburban women and it's been obama's democratic firewall over time. and romney has made progress with them on his favorite ability rating and on handling the economy, but not on ballot tests. now, tonight will tell us whether he continues to make progress. what's your thought here, does obama need to bring in women's issues earlier and more prominently in the debate? >> i think he does. and i wrote for msnbc.com today that this is an area where frankly i think the reason you've seen romney do a little better in the polls is because these issues didn't come up in the first debate. what you'll see and usa gallup had an interesting poll yesterday that showed just how important for example the issue of choice and access to contraception is for women voters. 31% of women say birth control is an important issue for them. about 40% of women say the abortion issue is one that -- it is a top voting issue. so i think that lead will evaporate or any perceived lead will evaporate for romney once he mass to try to explain where he stands. blaurly remember last week he created a

of rhetoric talking about binders of women or any of those versus reality. let's talk about reality. in obama's cabinet today, he has five of 14 positions of women. when romney was in governor he had six of 14. he had a better record than president. let's take the time and not think about rhetoric. that's what team obama loves to do because they can't run on the record. the record is terrible. >> this was not necessarily does it not have good here. >> no, but again, you're talking about optics. i'm talking about a record. the record -- the facts are fewer woman today -- today in october of 2012 have jobs than had jobs when obama took office. that is a tragedy. that is terrible. there are fewer women working today in this country. and every woman should stand up and say every woman has the right to a job. we need president obama or whoever is president next to actually stimulate the economy to make small businesses work. this is unbelievable. so the point is the record means more than rhetoric. >> i want to get over to nia. the president repeatedly mentioned planned parenthood during the debat

requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women. now, when a senior staffer went to barack obama and complained about, believe it or not, rahm emanuel's attitude towards women, i know it's shocking, his rough and chauvinistic manner you know what obama's response was look, i really need rahm. that was his response. then as the environment continued to d-tn e-rate, finally obama got the women staffers together and had a dinner with them to address their concerns. the meeting began with obama looking at his watch saying are their genuine concerns i need to know about? i know i love your expressions, they are great. i wish they could be seen out there. again and again, she ignored the concerns of women. he ignred the concerns of wn who are going to be affected negatively by obamacare, all of the taxes that are going to hit the middle class, the medicine cabinet tax, the limitations on what we can put into our flexible spending accounts. but it is also the sheer way in which obama has patronized women that is so offensive and allies of the complete hypocrisy with more women mantra. c

has been about drawing the contrast between president obama who has stood with women the affordable care act whether it was lilly lilly ledbetter and a guy in mitt romney who believes women should be in binders and as though he doesn't even know some of the women he could bring to his cabinet. so i don't believe at the end of the day that gender gap that you're seeing a little bit of now is going to present itself in the voting booth. i believe that women are going to vote for barack obama because they understand what's at stake. and they understand that their reproductive rights and the right to an abortion in this country is at stake. if mitt romney is elected. he's not telling the truth and he can't be trusted. >> eliot: okay. nancy, you made a very persuasive argument. every piece of which i wholeheartedly agree with but you didn't confront the problem which i'm trying to get my arms around which has at this moment -- you said at the end of the day the gender gap will ere-emerge. it would seem to be a se

and bain, you need to to get women. >> a number of polls indicate that president obama's lead among women voters shrinking and i don't just mean republican women, but college-educated women who are liberal on social issues arm moving towards romney. >> i talked to someone over the weekend said that all of this is about who you want be married to, and in the first debate, obama was so peevish that you don't want to be married to that guy, and ravi seem to moderate and reasonable. -- romney it seemed a moderate and reasonable. that is what turned around the polls. in the second debate, romney, by eating them like commodities -- "bags full of women," "briefing books full of women." >> direct your e-mails to evan thomas, not to any of us. [laughter] romney had the same effect on women in the first debate as he did on manned. obama had spent $150 million on negative ads as a guy who wants to -- a guy he was completely indifferent when the wife of a steelworker he led off the dies canr anthe odmo looks in the camera and says, "mitt romney does not care about my wife or anyone." romney stands o

to his 2009 finding of the fairer pay act as an example of his support for women. >> president obama: that's an example of the kind of advocacy we need because women are are increasingly the bread winners in the family. this is not just a win issue, this is a family issue, a middle class issue, and that's why we've got to fight for it. >> romney taughted his record as massachusetts governor, where he said he went out of his way to recruit women for his cabinet. >> i went to my staff and said, how come all of the people for these jobs are all men. and they said these are the people who have the qualifications. i said, gosh, can't we find some women that are also qualified. so we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. i went to a number of women's groups and said can you help us find folks. they brought us whole binders of women. >> reporter: that last remark immediately touch off a string of parities among democrats. in iowa, while talking about the need for more math and science teachers, presiden

you've got this combination of obama can run the score up with women because democrats and the president are standing well on values but his poor performance in the first debate has brought some of that back home. all of a sudden, they're back in play a little bit. now it is ultimately not a question of whether obama is going to win the women's vote just like mitt romney is going to win 60% of the white vote. it is a question of how much does the president win it by? that's where we're really arguing about here. >> kaili, it seems like every election season, they're defining a different kind of mom. a lot of the talk this year has been about waitress moms, especially in the state of ohio. i don't really know what a waitress mom is. i imagine somebody who has a work a job and has kids and maybe it is their second job. >> an average american woman. >> there you go. an average american woman. >> like ann romney. with car elevators. >> the car elevator thing you know most waitresses, i imagine have them but

poll of uncommitted voters found 39% of the women thought mr. obama won. 29% mr. romney. 33% a tie. nancy cordes is covering the obama campaign for us tonight. nancy. >> reporter: scott, one of the president's main goals last night was to try to bring some of those women back into the fold. in fact, both men shared personal stories that were designed to appeal to women, though in one notable case, that may have backfired. an audience member, katherine venton, gave both candidates the perfect opening. nd in what new ways do you intend to rectify the inequalities in its workplace, specifically regarding female who make only 72% of what their male counter parts earn. ar katherine, this was a great herineon. i was raised by a single mom who edd to put herself through school while looking after two kids. ma reporter: president obama pointed out the first bill he signed when he took office gave women more leeway to sue e thoyers over unequal pay. >> i have two daughters and i want to make sure that they have the same opportunities that anybody's sons have. >> reporter: romney argued he m

, this was a runaway among president obama among women a week ago. what happened? >> first of all i'm not in any kind of statf panic because i think independent women think for themselves, looking at issues and i think as you see the next two debates they will talk about what women care about are the economy. they care about jobs. they care about the cost of gasoline and groceries. and when they listen to these two men talk and make their ultimate decision they're going to vote for the man they trust on the economy, among other issues and i think that women will in the end support president barack obama. jon: well, senator d'amato, if the economy and pocketbook issues are what matter to women what explains the surge to mitt romney in the last week or two? >> i think debbie has got it exactly right in terms of what women, most women will be thinking about. and i think that that's why you have this dramatic it shift to romney. because on the economic issues and debbie mentioned gasoline, the president promised one thing and the gasoline prices would come down and they have doubled. the president proble

in this race, but a very big contrast is the differences between president obama and governor romney on women's issues. they are literally oceans apart. >> those who call it a big bird comment, are they really lowering the significance of what that might mean to some? >> no, the main point is that president obama doesn't need a binder to tell him about qualified women. some of his closest friends, his colleagues are women. his life has been one of protecting and advancing the rights of women. the first vote that he -- actually, the first bill he signed into law was the lilly ledbetter act for fair pay for fair work. he supports the equal rights amendment. he supports lilly ledbetter, fair pay. he supports planned parenthood, title ten, affordable care act. governor romney is bad for women. from day one he'd be bad for women because he said for the fist thing he would do is repeal the affordable care act, which has many protections for women. for the first time, women will not be discriminated against in insurance plans because they're women. they will no longer be treated as a pre-existing co

and they brought us binders full of women. >> good day. i'm andrea mitchell live in new york. today president obama and governor romney trying to capitalize on their debate performances in three of the most politically valuable battleground states. a lot of the buzz surrounding the two candidates is about that verbal brawl last night. the brawl that broke out at hofstra. joining me now for our daily fix chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post politics.com and mark halperin senior political analyst for "time" and msnbc. chris to you as a viewer, not rating the debate, winners or losers, not that, but who answered questions and who was responsive to the people in the room and people at home? >> my read out on it, andrea, i watched it live and rewatched some of the clips, i have not watched the whole thing again, so let me say that as a caveat, but my read is neither of them really answered that many questions. candy crowley, i think, to her credit, repeatedly kind of said, you answered apples and the question was oranges. they did not answer the questions that were asked of them

. then there are younger women, and seniors. seniors are voting republicans, and obama has had a problem with seniors for some time. younger people if they vote, voting very democratic, but a big question about what the youth turnout is going to be. host: obama may not get a big backing again because only 48 percent of voters ages 18 to 24 say they will but. guest: if you look at 2010 come off-year elections, 6.6 young women who voted in 2008 did not show up in 2010. 11 million and married women who voted in 2008 did not vote in 2010. host: let me ask you their top issue. the polls that we had this morning in the papers show most important issues that impact women, and when they ask women that abortion topped the list. guest: i was flabbergasted, but it is a combination of women's issues and abortion and the economy. the new polls that are out showed that 41% of women, that their top issue is a woman's issue, abortion, birth control, and that is surprising. that is record high. there are two aspects. a lot of women voters feel like i cannot tell the parents guys.en these dyes tommy yes or no, are you

deeply into one of the president's major strengths. he still trails mr. obama among women, but now by just a single point. we'll see if later polls bear that out. we have a team of campaign 2012 correspondents covering the debate and we're going to go first to jan crawford with the romney campaign. >> reporter: well, scott, if you look at these polls, one of the reasons it's so striking to see governor romney's increased support with women voters is that earlier in this campaign he trailed with women voters by double digits. his support with married women voters is solid, but if you look inside these polls, there is a dramatic split. the president, according to the latest politico/george washington university poll, actually leads overwhelmingly with single women, 70% to 27%. romney leads with married women, 52% to 46%. so he has a real opportunity as he arrives here tonight to continue reaching out to those women voters. his aides tell me he will continue his focus on the economy, basically arguing that we can not afford to saddle the next generation, our children, with this crushi

obama's lead among women, but the difference between men and women and their support for obama. by that definition you actually see the gender gap has been pretty consistent while the horse race has been really volatile. jenna: so you're saying that poll that we just saw doesn't matter? >> no, i'm not saying it doesn't matter, i'm saying that women and men have been moving in concert. and why it's important -- and so you have, actually, a gender gap in the latest gallup poll that's ten points, and it's been 8-10 points in the last few weeks, i blogged about this in huffington post for folks who want to see the data. president obama could win by winning with women and losing with men, and that hasn't happened since 1996 and bill clinton who won with the largest gender gap we'd had in a presidential election ever and lost by a point to bob dole. jenna: all right. angela? >> the problem is this, though, and when we talk about women's issues, i did a book "bamboozled" where i dedicated a whole chapter to what do women really want. and they care about the same issues as men. they ca

? president obama's campaign is now mocking mitt romney for his comment about binders, binders of women. anyone watching that debate knew what romney meant. it backfires. so to do the simpson rake in the head analogy, every attack that they seem to go after him on, for example, the women attack, i pulled up the 2011 "time" magazine article, the white house boys club, obama has a woman problem. he has been criticized for the atmosphere in the white house, for who he surrounds himself with. for the fact he pays women less. it say if this is a fight you want, bring it on. all the ads he cut with the celebrities, i disagree with you. they are for voters he already had. >> dana: that is true. on the binder thing, talk about that and get your reaction. if you're in business and you are going to expand your talent pool, how else are you supposed to look up and find possible candidates than have them in a thing, like maybe not be a binder, it could be a trapper keeper or digitized today. how do you have it? >> eric: that is exactly what it was. romney showing the businessman experience, which b

's record over barack obama. if you look at women and how they faired, it has not been well. there's more women unemployed and making less under barack obama. m. >> i think women have a better chance here with barack obama. >> let me ask you a bit about style last night. candy crowley had to tangle with both of the candidates at times. let me play a little something for you. >> i intend to win it -- >> mr. president, i got to move you along. >> he got the first -- he actually got the first question. so i get the last seasons on that one. >> in the follow-up it doesn't quite work like that, but i'm going to give you a chance here. >> candy, candy, candy, i don't have a policy of stopping wind jobs -- >> we're going to move you along to taxes. >> well, let me read a tweet from "the new york times" nick kristoff. since both candidates are trying to convince voters they respect women, they may start by respecting candy crowley. do you think the aggressive nature of this debate, chip, and it was aggressive -- just as a viewer sometimes i thought it felt a little uncomfortable. do you think tha

obama pointed out that the first bill he signed when he took office gave women more leeway to sue employers over unequal pay. >> i've got two daughters and i want to make sure that they have the same opportunities that anybody's sons have. >> reporter: romney argued he made hiring women a priority when he was elected governor of massachusetts in 2002. >> we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. i went to a number of women's groups and said can you help us find folks, and they brought us whole binders full of women. >> reporter: but today, jesse hermel, who oversaw the group that compiled those binders, said this. >> to be perfectly clear, mitt romney did not request those resumes. we approached him with the resumes or the so-called binders full of women. >> reporter: romney argued it was the slow pace under mr. obama that was really hurting working women. >> there are three and a half million women living in poverty today than when the president took office. >> reporter: both the president and

. >> reporter: romney argued it was the slow pace under mr. obama that was really hurting working women. >> there are three and a half million women living in poverty today than when the president took office. >> reporter: both the president and governor romney have a history of hiring strong women. the president's secretary of state is a woman. governor romney's chief of staff is a woman. but what likely matters most to women voters is which candidate they think will do a better job of helping women, and men, get jobs over the next four years. >>> it was a simple bumper tap, but was it motive for murder? police have just released a clue in an unsolved killing of a bay area man. he was killed last year after bumping the fender of another car in north oakland. on the surveillance video, you can see the two suspects argue with the victim. they followed and shot butler a few blocks away. >> not only are they murderers, they're thesis. they stole my brother's future. he was on his way to do good things. >> police say the incident happened in the morning. they're hoping witnesses will come f

. and women voters were the key to barack obama's victory in 2008. 56% cast their vote for him. so, what is going to be happening in 2012 when it comes down to the women's vote? joining me now is anita mcbride. anita is a senior adviser for the george w. bush foundation and she was chief of staff to laura bush. anita, thanks for being with us on this saturday. i want to first focus on a "usa today"/gallup poll out this week on women voters. in swing states, it shows that mitt romney is leading over mr. obama, 50% to 46. and when we look back at 2008, it was the women vote that was a given for president obama and also leading up until today. >> mm-hmm. >> what happened? >> well, i think that we are seeing that, you know, mitt romney and paul ryan are closing this gap and this so-called, you know, war on women, that had been in the headlines for a number of months is really coming down to the reality now that, you know, women are not single-issue voters. and they are focusing on a lot of things. and they're now also having an opportunity, after these last couple of debates, where they can

women voters as he meets president obama in tonight's debate. >>> new scare in the meningitis outbreak. officials are now look iing at o new drugs that could be linked to the spread. >>> but we begin this morning with a look at today's eye opener, your world in 90 seconds. >> i take responsibility. i'm in charge of the state department. >> secretary of state clinton takes the blame for the attack on the libyan consulate. the one that killed the u.s. ambassador and others. >> hillary clinton said the buck stop with her. >> it went an intelligence failure. nobody wants aanswers more than i do. these are people who i care deeply about. >>> the white house is promising president obama will not hold back during tonight's town hall style debate in new york. >> the first presidential showdown the democrat candidate, if you remember missed it. >> moderator candy crowley asking follow-up questions. >> if somebody asks about apples and you get an answer about oranges, you say, wait, the question was about apples. >>> two hikers. >>> 99 cent only stores is actively shopping for retail space on ro

and they are not going to defend us. president obama has appointed over half the women to the supreme court. he has consistently had our back. he's even been in front of us pushing health care and access to affordable health care that provides a whole range of preventive health care services and reproductive health care services, including access to birth control. and he's the first one who said being a woman is no longer going to be a pre-existing condition. our health and our -- our health insurance can no longer be denied to us because we are pregnant or taken away from us and they can't charge us higher premiums just because we are women. mr. ryan said earlier in your program that there's no war against women. republicans can call it all they want. when all of the fatalities are women and the hard-fought gains we've hl have been under assault and has passed the house of representatives, they defunded planned parenthood. they passed a bill that said that your employers could deny your access to birth control and dictate your health care. one of the things that women feel strongly about is we kno

women went for obama by 13 points in the last election. split with men. mccain. so women are critically important to it. the reason he did well. democrats do well generally with women is republican party has in the minds of most women anti-women in a lot of ways. i could go on and. the list is staggeringly long. romney doesn't -- he has to inherit that. he has to inherit general view of the republican party amongst women which is negative. >> dana: actually been my experience my life that the republican party treats women like crap. >> greg: when you apply for jobs you are in a binder. >> dana: envelope. >> andrea: isn't president obama wasn't he the one man glass creeling that stopped. >> bob: explain why women vote for every presidential candidate. >> dana: i am not saying that republicans don't have a problem but single women move toward romney. married women in particular. there is a huge problem that the republican party has when it comes to women of color and latino. big challenge that has to be addressed. coming up, not next. but what we talk about next is the political lightning

with a significant way. you heard it did. according to reuters. it was president obama's pitch to women that put governor romney on the defensive which then led to that widely talked about and tweeted comment of the governor about binders full of women. let me bring you salon.com -- and there's fact checking going on about what wept down with this i guess governor romney saying he went looking for women to hire. >> yes. >> what is the story there? >> first of all, romney wants a cookie for the bare minimum and making sure there's women at the table, 50% of the population and as it turns out that people that remember boston, massachusetts, during the romney administration know that in fact before anyone was even elected to that seat a group of women on both sides of the aisle came together and put that binder together and taking credit for something that was done before he showed up. >> he hired half of the cabinet women. >> he did have women represented but the number of women in high positions declined according to a study and further more, it's gone up again since duval patrick. >> wanting for

're directed at a demographic of women who they think will vote for obama if they can get them out to vote. in this case, women's rights and choice is something that they think is important. that's the reason they do it. >> don't you run the risk of alienating women when you have celebrities misstating the facts? >> i'll guarantee you they're running those ads some place that does not have a whole lot of those kind of women you're talking about watching. >> can i point something out? >> all of them are concerned about jobs. >> there was a "usa today" poll that came out today, really, really telling because all voters inclusive, women, skewed to president obama, but very, very importantly, likely female voters, it's now 48-48 obama and romney, and that, that is the difference because likely male voters, it's clear. 54 romney, 42 obama. so the focus on women is smart on obama's part, but it's just not working in the swing states. >> okay. go ahead. >> i just don't think that america is nearly as enamored with hollywood as the white house seems to be because of the things that eric is talking

that also show that mitt romney's doing as well with women as men. >> but -- >> or as obama. >> there are not swing state state-by-state tracking polls that say that. that is one overall gallup poll. >> no, the gallup poll in the battleground states actually showed that mitt romney is now in a tie. >> mm-hmm. i find that to be -- >> with barack obama among women. >> -- perplexing. >> because women are thinking for themselves and not going with the liberal line that they must be hyper-obsessed on abortion? >> i didn't bring it up. it's eight past the hour. mitt romney is leading president obama 51%-45%. know that this poll was taken in the days leading up to tuesday night's debate. according to a newm marquette poll, president obama is ahead one point after trailing by 11 points last month. >>> and yesterday on the campaign trail, both candidates tried to gain ground with women voters. take a listen. >> i've got to tell you, we don't have to collect a bunch of binders to find qualified, talented, driven young women ready to learn and teach in these fields right now. and when
