the urces, hardest talk >>> >>> the second debate between president obama and governor mitt romney this past tuesday ur drew a tv audience of 65.6 million viewers. the debate was at hofstra university on long island in new york, town hall style. testy, tense and quite rivetting throughout. here's the president, pressing governor romney on romney's tax plan and d how he'll do what he claims he will do. >> if somebody came to you, governor, with a plan that said, here, i want to spend $7 or $8 trillion and we're going to pay for it, but we can't tell you until maybe after the election how we're going to do it, you wouldn't have taken such a sketchy deal. and neither should you, the american people, because the math doesn't add up. sh >> we're talking . about math - when we're talking about math that doesn't add up, how about $4 trillion of deficits over the last five years, or $5 trillion, that's math that doesn't add up. ma we have a president talking about someone's plan in a way that's completely foreign to what my real plan is. and then we have his own record which is we have fou

of barack obama would respond. the first debate, sleepy time ma gill cutty or pretty talk jones. >> candy, what governor romney said just isn't true. >> jon: it's alive! it's alive! [cheering and applause] whoa, whoa. yes, president barack obama decided to attend this debate. [laughter] and the two candidates could finally have a truthful, substantive discussion about how much they [bleeped] hate each other. [laughter] >> governor, we have actually produced more oil. >> no, no, how much did you cut licenses and permits on federal land and federal... >> production is up. >> it's down. >> no it isn't. >> production on government land and oil is down 14%. >> governor, what you're saying just not true. >> you'll get your chance in a moment. i'm still speaking. the answer is -- >> if you're asking a question. >> that wasn't a question. [audience reacts] >> jon jon i believe you meant to add, mother [bleeped]. romney was sharp and drew blood. >> he said that by now we'd have unemployment at 5.4%. the difference between where it is and 5.4% is million americans work, 9 million. >> jon: that's go

focus of the debate. maybe we'll get answers from obama. maybe he will tell us why he threw hillary clinton and the intelligence group under the bus. will he man up and take responsibility for this? also this evening. city corp. ceo resigns and they all beat. larry, this is the second day we close high on the day. this rally had nothing to do with citigroup. i'll tell you what is behind it in a few moments. round two kicks off. we are two hours away. the second obama debate comes in the race and also very close to barack obama in the key swing states. this is the town hall format. it has proved tricky in the past. of course the topics are going to range from domestic policy and you can expect talk about the attack in libya that has broiled the raise ice in recent. >> why is the white house letting hillary clinton take the blame? >> i take responsibility. 60,000 people all over the world. the president and the vice president wouldn't be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals. clinton saying the buck stops with her. >> harry truman had it right.

. the uproar over president obama's debate performance has subsided. we are back to square one. tomorrow might be one of the most important dates on the calendar. the polls show the race is dead even once again. president obama has maintained his lead in several key swing states like ohio and nevada. the numbers have stabilized. but all the attention turns to the town hall-style debate tomorrow night. the obama campaign launched a new ad to define the president's message in the home stretch. >> every president inherits challenges. few have faced so many. four years later our enemies have been brought to justice. our heroes are coming home. assembly lines are humming again. there are still challenges to meet, children to educate, a middle class to rebuild, but the last thing we should do is turn back now. >> i'm barack obama and i approve this message. >> part of the strategy is to emphasize his accomplishments of the first term. another part is to flat out motivate supporters. michelle obama tweeted a picture of her absentee ballot to encourage early voting. the campaign is also drumming up vi

debate. but 82,000 negative ads by romney against obama. obama is the same over the last month? come on. we are hoping gree to vote for somebody -- we are hungry to vote for somebody. >> i am hungry for snipes. >> tucker, try to ignore bill. did obama win or was it because he just came off delivering the worst performance in debate history? >> you know, he won among journalists on twitter. that is the whole world. by the way, twitter is the most distorting social medium. it is the most distorting fact of journalism. everybody in our business gets his opinion honed by everybody else by the time it ends, and then nobody has an original opinion. i watched at home, and i actually thought romney did well. i am not a huge romney guy. >> you have always been critical of him. i agree with you about the twitter thing. i watch the debate looking for moments to tweet on. i will be drinking and there is the binder comment. that's all you remember without getting the context of it because you are too busy to act funny or seem interesting like lori tries to do on this show. >> i have a tough time on

. there is one critical issue in this debate. the libya question. obama was at sea. he was asked about the security in libya, and benghazi. he didn't try to answer because he had no answer. instead he went on about how we're going to catch these guys. romney, i think had a huge opening. obama ended by saying i'm offended by implication we'd mislead. the rhetoric was mislead? you sent out your un ambassador to mislead america on five television shows in one morning. implying it's about a video talking about a riot. there was none. there wasn't a video in this issue in benghazi. and then, there was one tactical error romney made which was he kept asking the president questions every lawyer knows you never ask a question for which you don't already have the answer in already have the answer in hand. that gave obama a chance to counterpunch. we've got candy crowley's intervention, which is essentially incorrect, supportings obama on the transcript. he did not call it's a terror incident. there was a big opening that was missed. i think it was contaminated by the actions of the moderator. b

and leadership. meanwhile other polls and focus groups showed obama winning the debate by not that much. one thing is for sure, both candidates were combative. stop laughing at me. like other shows "red eye cts convened its own group. let's see how it reacted to one of the comments. >> mr. president, have you looked at your pension? have you looked at your pension. >> have i to say. >> mr. president, have you looked at your pension. >> you know, i don't look at my pension. it is not as big as yours. >> let me give have you some advice. >> i don't check it that often. >> you also have investments in chinese p cs and investments outside of the united states. you have investments to a kay dense trust. >> you know what amazing is you don't see frank in the corner asking the cat what he thinks. oh, i'm sorry. are you close with him, frank? governor, did you like anything you heard? >> no, i didn't. i ran two campaigns for governor where i did not mention my opponent in print, radio or television. i think people are hungry to elect a leader. i thought it was ?ieping. it was not what i am going to

, obama couldn't and cannot overcome the damage he did in the first debate, because what happened in the first debate is that romney became acceptable but he did not look like a mean rich guy who was sort of thoughtless and totally unconnected from the real world. once you make somebody acceptable, it is very hard to make him unacceptable. they had made him unacceptable, and when obama did use that -- did not use that in the fourth debate, it was a serious mistake. >> i want to talk about the women's vote. >> made a concerted effort to hire women who have backgrounds that made them qualified to be members of our candidate. i went to women's groups and said, can you help us find folks, and they brought us hold binders full of women. >> that went viral almost immediately. what set that off? >> the binders. smalley, that did not bother me. what bothered me was that the next day, i found out that romney's people did not approach the women's groups for suggestions. the women's groups approach romney and said, you don't have any women, you don't have any women and bain, you need to to g

. president obama's camp scored the debate a win for the president but say the race is still tight. >> some say it's the best debate ever. randall pinkston joins us from new york with the latest. >> reporter: from start to finish, it was a political slugfest. president obama and mitt romney clashing on a host of issues at times accusing each other of not telling the truth. it was a very different exchange from the first debate. >>> reporter: president obama and mitt romney wasted little time going after each other in the second debate. >> there were a whole bunch of oil companies. >> i had a question. how much did you cut them by? >> you want me to answer? >> i'm happy to answer the question. >> reporter: in a snap poll of uncommitted voters 37% said president obama won the debate. >> the picture is becoming more clear as to how sort of sketchy all of the romney/ryan assertions are. >> reporter: romney comes out on top when voters were asked who would do a better job with the economy. >> i think a lot of undecided voters who tuned in tonight heard from the governor himself how he would perf

? >> most improved goes to barack obama. a much stronger debate tonight. you can read social media. a lot of democrats fired up. i must tell you, i think that mitt romney has had two very good debates back to back. i think a solid performance tonight, and i think overall, he looked like he could be president more than two weeks ago. i tried to score it by the questions. i had a lot of questions as draws, and a couple of questions that romney did better on. had a little more edge to the president. i gave him the edge. >> i think the libya question was not a good moment for governor romney. otherwise, in the debate, both sides, as we said, vice presidential debate, both sides left did what they wanted to do no question, democrat intensity will come back. governor romney did a good job of working against the incumbent's record. two weeks ago, it was about governor romney. made it about president obama in the first debate. still quick sand out there, what is this? what are the american people deciding on election day? if you want to keep the incumbe incumbent, then obama's performance was pro

. i won't quibble. we all remember what happened when the ghost of barack obama debated mitt romney. >> what was he doing tonight? he went in there disarm. he was like an hour-and-a-half i think i can get through this thing. where was obama tonight sniem reb they admitted to the... all agreed to believe their eyes and ears. so vice presidential debate. fox? your move >> laughing off the problems the way joe biden did, people were offended by that. >> laughing in a hostile, aggressionive, scornful way >> raddatz was playing with the biden team >> the moderator's action or inaction... >> him smirking and smiling rude, condescending, mean at times. wondered, you know, if he had some burbon before he went out there >> reminded me of a musk ox running across the tundra with the moderator under foot. sniem a musk ox across the tundra? settle down, eskimo annie oakley. enough with the mutual of omaha. look, we get it. you live in alaska. when you live in alaska in a town with roads and a wal-mart and two star bucks and your own plane and television station in your house, it's not [bleep] o

debate. we do have two people who've made up their mind. one for obama, one for governor romney. but basically most people thought it was a draw, chris. >> let me ask all four women there to answer a question tonight that romney did not answer. he was asked where he stood on equal pay for women. and he was asked directly by one of the people in the town hall tonight. he refused to answer the question. obama tagged him later saying he wouldn't answer it before when it came up. i want to know if those four women were surprised that one of the candidates refused to support equal pay for equal work and does that effect their vote? >> why don't you take that dawn because you're leading towards romney. >> i don't think he really even thought about it. >> the fact he didn't answer the question? >> i hope the next debate he does. >> sharon, what about you? you said you were impressed by the fact he had women in his cabinet. >> i mean, i'm impressed he made and effort, but he didn't talk about how he felt about having them there. >> and he didn't answer the equal pay question. how do you

, and that was a problem. >> let's roll and add that the -- obama campaign is rolling out this week following the debate, which they think is a big plus for them. let's see. >> in what new ways do you intend to rectify the inequalities in the workplace, specifically regarding females making only 72% of what their female counterparts earn? >> i had the chance to pull together a cabinet and all the applicants seem to be men. i said, well, gosh, can't we find some women that are also qualified? they brought us binders full of women. >> so binders full of women being the web viral line of the week. it's clearly a strategy on obama's part, aimed at turning out women voters, which they're concerned about where romney is making inroads. what do you think of that strategy? making. >> kim, the women's vote is crucial for obama. i mean, they are stressing this, every democrat i talk to says this may be where the election, what it depends on. >> look, they've got a couple of core subgroups. the hispanic community, minors, in particularly women and the youth vote. whether or not barack obama wins will be in part by

that first debate debacle, barack obama had definitely won the low expectations game. >> for obama the bar is rather low, compared to the first debate all he has to do is string a few sentences together, coherently to make eye contact with a single extentient human and show the slightest animation in his face. >> colbert: charles kraut hammer is right, low bar, obama's last debate performance was so bad .. that bar was set at charles kraut hammer. >> now, mitt, on the other hand, mitt, mitt romney, much greater challenge. >> we are told that they have practiced to such a level of detail that he even was preparing how he sits and there is a good reason for that. he is going to be sitting on a bar stool and mitt romney is a mormon, so he doesn't spend a lot of time on bar stools, according to his aides, because he doesn't drink. >> colbert: yes. that is true. that is true. you should know that. only people who drink know how to sit on stools. that's why, whenever you see someone successfully sitting on one, that is an early sign of alcoholism. seek help!, please! >> the guy falling off the s

, mitt romney had a plan, a strategy, he executed. president obama didn't. in this debate president obama had a strategy. you could see all throughout the debate. >> president obama i thought strategically had a good debate. >> at the top of the hour we're also watching this. any minute the kickoff of a post-debate campaign event. paul ryan will be stumping in ohio with condoleezza rice. we'll go live in that warrants. but now to ed shultz host of "the ed show." we were talking about after the last presidential debate. did he bring the fire he demanded? you were upset the last one. >> i don't think the president left too much on the table last night. it's hard to win in 90 minutes. that's president came damn close. in the midst of all that in the president' performance, mitt romney created two new problems for himself on women and immigration. the problem with women has nothing to do with contraception it's now how they're viewed in the workplace. they're out there talking about what he really thought of lilly ledbetter. he wasn't for it, but now he's not going to repeal it. last night wh

said the president came up to him after the debate to explain why president obama took so long to call it a full-blown terror attack. he wanted to deliberate and "make sure he had all the information." this is crazy. this is really, really, this is really important, president obama tells the american public one thing and goes to a debate and says another and off camera has yet another conversation. >> request not give that answer when asked in the debate? he did wait a long-term. there you have it, he did. he wait add long time. he said he wanted more information? no, you didn't. you had conflicting stories. you should have waited to get more information. instead, you came out and talked about the spontaneous video, you apologized to the muslim community which made me think, why apologize for a terrorist attack. i have to say last night i'm surprised that mitt romney did not come back and say, that conflict was attacked twice before that day. when are you talking about when you responded. there were two attacks before the attack on helping on 9/11, why not do that in the spring and a m

presidential debate. president obama, former massachusetts governor mitt romney, they will take to the stage and i'll show you a live picture now. lindh university at boca raton, florida, that's where it will take place. this format will be unlike any presidential debate so far this year. what is the format and how important is this, sort of final debate as they try to get the last votes and the last words? >> reporter: martin, we have been saying this week after week, this is the most important night of the election season and this is going to be the most important night of the election season, tomorrow night's debate. it's going to take place right behind me at lindh university in boca raton. mitt romney is surging, barack obama trying to stem a little bit of the political bleeding right now. the format calls for talk about foreign policy. they're going to talk about the changing face of the middle east specifically in regards to terrorism and they're going to talk about china. they're going to be seated at a table, perhaps that might swell a little bit of the fire works. the fact of the m

, good morning everyone. it is round two of the presidential debates tonight and president obama is under a lot of pressure. if the polls mean anything which is debatable in itself but if they do, the president has lost some significant ground after his performance in denver two weeks ago. the president did have a steady lead in many swing states including new hampshire but it seems that's pretty much wiped out. a suffolk university news poll has the two candidates tied there at 47%. and a really shocking poll coming out of gallup and "usa today," the president has consistently been well ahead with women voters but now seems he's tied up there too. the poll surveyed voters in 12 swing states and found an even split among likely women voters with each candidate taking 48%. that is pushing romney into the lead overall coming in at 50 to 46 against the president. but obama pollster joel beninson says there are some deep flaws in the polling, especially in the way gallup identifies likely voters. no matter what the poll
