of libya i think you have to say both the president and romney were wrong. the president was wrong because he seemed to imply that he had declared the attack in benghazi an act of terror the next day. he was clearly stunned romney saying well you went off to a fundraiser in las vegas. no i was in the rose garden and i declared it an act of terror. all he said was no acts of terror will shake the resolve of this great nation and didn't refer specifically to that at all. romney was wrong in that he tried to say look you have given up the game here because you declared it an act of terror on september 12th but susan rice went out and said it wasn't an act of terror. i am not sure either of those are true. >> fox and friends will be joined by robert gibbs at 7:00 a.m. eastern this morning with more reaction for you. now to other highlights. in the debate they were both very aggressive and tins hitting each other hard on the issues. listen. >> think about what the governor just said. he said when i took office the price of gasoline auz 1.80, 1.86. why is that? because the economy was on the ver

performance by romney in the first debate, both candidates feeling the pressure to perform tonight. stay with fox news from now through primetime when you have megyn kelly and bret baier leading the coverage. let's kick it off with greg who is at half stra. he look -- hofstra and he lookso interested. i'm sure you've talked to a ton of people today. what are they saying? >> greg: i found out that president obama had chicken today. but he was unhappy because they were out of dog. the big issue here is the altitude. they don't want a recurrence of what happened a few weeks ago. the elevation here is 60 feet. it's 60 feet. they have had security and aides here to prep obama and prevent implosion and adjust for the change. they lowered the podium four feet. in industry terms called a perino. >> dana: if it's town hall format, there is no podium. >> greg: well, i'm wrong on that. the big key here is aggressiv aggressiveness. they want president obama to be more aggressive. sources told me he spent the entire week practicing a new frown. i have been told by somebody that looked like john kerry

in romney's favor right across the country. tonight, both candidates came out ready for a fight. and here's how it all happened. >> candy, what governor romney said just isn't true. >> it was a real scrap. from the outset, both men went on the attack. mitt romney hammering home his basic campaign theme. >> the president's policies have been exercised over the last few years and they haven't put americans back to work. >> reporter: this time, president obama was ready. attacking crisply and frankly. >> governor romney says he has a five-point plan? governor romney doesn't have a five-point plan, he has a one-point plan. that plan is to make sure folks at the top play by a different set of rules. >> reporter: within the first 20 minutes as they argued about the president's record on energy, they almost seemed to want to wrassel each other. >> we are now -- >> and production on government on government land is down -- >> no, it isn't. >> of oil is down 14%. and production -- >> what you're saying is just not true. >> that's absolutely true. >> reporter: they really don't like each other. >>

it to the president. >> reporter: on the day after president obama and governor romney both hit the campaign trail, both sides claiming victory, debate watchers were mixed. >> i think mitt romney came out a little more articulate. he had a little bit more of a clear version. >> earnest resolve and social intelligence, i gotta go with obama. >> reporter: other polls showed similar results. u.s. and political science professor cory cook also gives the second debate to mr. obama. >> he called out the inaccuracy of governor romney's statements. i think governor romney, on the other hand, sort of appeared to be bullying quite a bit. >> reporter: it was a debate that focused on a number of issues. cook said romney stumbled on immigration and women. >> i think a lot of what we'll be talking about is this binders full of women and how actually, not only was it inartful and really sort of an awkward moment in the debate, but it was also fundamentally inaccurate. >> reporter: the most heated exchange was on the attack in libya. a moment, says cook, that fell flat for romney. foreign policy is the sole topic

the video has 5300 hits on youtube. that is your 5@5:30. >>> president obama p and mitt romney both back on the trail after their debate. the war on terror becoming a larger issue as the fbi thwarted the terror plot we have been talking about. >> good morning. they had the first court appearance yesterday we are still learning more about him and his connections. but the resurgence of al qaeda appears to be playing a pretty big role now on the campaign trail. for starters there is the terrorist organization itself which is strengthening overseas. especially over south africa. it may be changing the way president obama campaigned. here he was a week ago. >>> four years ago i told you i would end the war in iraq, and i did. i said we would end the war in afghanistan, and we are. i said we would refocus on the people who actually attacked us on 9-11 and today al qaeda is on the run and osama bin laden is dead. >>> yesterday that all changed in two stump speeches he had dropped that reference to al qaeda being on the run. >> four years ago i told you we would end the war in iraq and i did. i

is the substance. and i think we saw last week that both governor romney and president obama weren't afraid to interrupt and get involved and duke it out a little bit. i this i people like that format. candy crowley is a professional. whatever the rules are, she'll handle it well. at the end of the day, it's not about the process. it's how do we get americans back to work and out of debt. and i think that's why this debate, like the others, will favor mitt romney because the president's plans, hey, he's worked hard, they have not worked. we are $16 trillion in debt. we have joblessness over 43% -- over 8% for 43 months until this month. and doubling of gas prices, et cetera. these are the issues, and i think it's going to be the vision that mitt romney's laid out versus the record of the president. and i think that favors the governor. >> you're talking -- you're focusing on the economic issues that many of us thought were going to be the core of this campaign. at the same time, benghazi and libya and the concerns that -- >> yeah. >> -- that lindsey graham expressed. how much do you think m

. >> i want to ask you about both. did the romney campaign say why they wouldn't respond? i know they get these requests all the time. these are six well respected organizations that work with children. >> it's hard to say what their motivation was. >> they didn't say? >> they did not say. there was a lot of e-mail traffic, but basically they came to the conclusion that they would just simply not respond even though this is a really, really big issue that should be confronted in the election cycle. >> well, let me ask you about the president then, his response, and what you thought resonated with you or didn't resonate with in you terms of what he says he's going to do. >> and the president of course has the advantage of having a track record in this area that people like the advocates are interested in. so he's supporting major health care legislation that whether bring millions of children into the health care system, he's supporting the earned income tax skred for poor families and the child tax credit. and we asked specifically what are you doing going forward. he talked about expandi

job, the last hour was terrible for mitt romney, both on benghazi -- >> let's talk to rob portman, a member of the senate budget committee, john, over to you. >> maria, thank, senator portman, i know you don't have a lot of time. but plainly, president obama was a lot stronger this time around. how does this net out in your home state of ohio which could be the key to the election? >> i do think that president obama came out swinging, we expected that. he indicated he would do it. he certainly did, but i would agree with the comments on that i -- that i heard on the panel, he came out swinging, but he didn't provide a base for the future. he changed his style, and what independent voters in ohio are going to look for is what are you going to do? i thought mitt romney did a wonderful job, he had a devastating description of what happened in the last four years, but secondly, he laid out a positive agenda. >> we talked about tax reform earlier. >> only one candidate laid out a pro-growth tax reform proposal. to create jobs, all president obama could do was critique it. >> what did y

and ohio today, governor romney will campaign in virginia. both candidates have less than a week to prepare in florida where the focus is on foreign policy. danielle leigh, nbc news. >>> thank you. have you ever wondered where a google search takes place? scott mcgrew does here this herf the secret tech center. >> google has launched that web site to show off. here is where your google question goes to server farms like this one. one blogger said it reminded him of "the matrix." larry wise made his first public appearance. page has been missing from press conferences. all we knew he lost his voice. when page showed up at tuesday's conference and actually spoke, that was worth noting. >> i really want you to have a great experience and we want to be innovative on hardware and software. >> nice to see him getting better, but many members of the press and analysts community want more information about what is wrong with mr. page. another ipo on the market. shutterstock on the right selling shares for the first time this morning. last week, we saw the debut of workday. the biggest tech ipo sinc

, the unemployment numbers coming out of wisconsin and ohio for example. does it help or hurt governor romney? >> both states have republican governors. republican governors are claiming that they create jobs. they need a foth create national policy to increase especially more jobs. in ohio, you have a state losing manufacturing jobs. in wisconsin, it's huge for economy. they elected republican senator and governor. >> rick: a lot of people say the numbers are misleading. ohio for example, lost 40,000 jobs. in the last year alone. >> i'm not sure it's what the voters in ohio feel. there are a couple of factors. they do believe the economy got better from where things were in terms of where in the beginning of the president's term. >> in the part of ohio, they're doing well. it depends on the automobile manufacturing jobs. the bottom line is the governor romney cannot win ohio, cannot become president. there are mathematical ways to see it happening otherwise. must-win state for him right now. the president is holding on to the lead. good sign and reflection voters feel positive about the econ

governor mitt romney and president obama. [applause] you both look so dashing. or as you call it, governor, business-casual. [laughter] i have been doing this for 25 years. i never run out of good things to say about al smith. i am talking about myself in the third person. my great-grandfather got into politics for a very simple reason. he liked people, rich people, poor people, democrat, native- born, democrat, republican, maker, or taker, al smith was a friend to all. [applause] drought his public life, he was a champion, and untiring advocate for the needy. as you all know, my great- grandfather was a catholic nominee for president. mitt romney is the first mormon nominee for president. [applause] my great-grandfather and it romney have another thing in common. for example, they both campaigned for governor. as democrats. [laughter] their biggest adversaries were successful businessman. for my great-grandfather, it was herbert hoover. for my road, it was mitt romney. -- for mitt romney, it was my rope. romney. [laughter] he is a very generous man. every year, he gives 10% of his income

aggressive. on being more pointed in his criticism of mitt romney, and in talking to aides, both last night on the debate side and again today, they really think he did accomplish this mission. they feel very positive, very upbeat. it is a very different mood around the abou obama cane today than after the last debate. we have to see what the long-term impact is, but in terms of the mood, it is a far different atmosphere than it was after the first debate. >> woodruff: karen, would you add anything to that? what about the romney folks? >> i think what they wanted to do was build on the momentum they were getting out of that first debate. not to lose any of that energy. i think that governor romney just sort of was there to parry back every point. they disputed every point. the energy answer, where one was up, and up was up and down was down, and they were throwing out statistics so fast. i think both camps came away thinking their own supporters are energized and excited. but i don't know who's minds would be changed by last night's debate. >> woodruff: julie, what about this focus on women

night's third and final debate between president obama and mitt romney. both are taking the day off from campaigning to cram for the debate, which will focus on foreign policy. >>> and finally, eight-time grammy winner adele is a mom. the singer reportedly gave birth to a baby boy last week. as you would expect, she is said to be ecstatic with the new arrival. >>> and time now for the weather and ginger zee. >> good morning, everybody. we have to start with the ryeen night. this is taken in georgia. you can really see it. some clear skies up and down the east coast, hopefully you got to enjoy some of the places and that happens when the earth passes through haley's comet orbit and all has to do with that famous orbit. the weather forecast. there's a small area for severe weather. midland, texas, all around to the mexican border. lubbock may get some thunderstorms, but not all that severe. this warming trend through the east coast, washingt >> this weather report has been brought to you by dedevry university. dan and sharyn. >> all right, thanks, ginger. >>> but first we're going to get i

obama 49%, mitt romney 46%. both campaigns are expressing concern about the moderator of the second debate. candy crowley will be hosting the debate, and she suggested that she'll play a larger role than agreed to by the candidates. according to "time" magazine's mark halperin, the two campaigns have raised objections saying the moderator's participation should be much more limited than she's leading people to believe. crowley has suggested she'll ask follow-up questions, which is not part of the agreed upon format. >>> as the candidates get in their final cram session before tomorrow night's debate, aides say president obama will be more aggressive, and mitt romney's camp says he'll be ready. for details, we go now to nbc's tracie potts for the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. aides say that the president has seen the tape of the last debate, that he was disappointed but that he is determined not to make the same mistakes tomorrow. >> hello everybody, hello, hello. >> reporter: president obama taking a break. advisors say expect a more aggressive pr

here and display a sense of humor. i thought there were both terrific. i am a mitt romney supporter, but i am not an obama heater. this is not a time to express policy. it is terrific. it is so humorous. it is the american tradition. i believe it is part of the reason why we can transfer power so peacefully every four years or eight years. it is just part of the fabric of being an american. a sense of humor. it is a fabulous thing to have a. i think they are both great. i enjoyed it thoroughly. a break away from all of the nastiness. i thought it was great. i look forward to it every time it occurs. host: have you heard the candidates like this before? caller: these particular candidates -- not really. i know it has been a grueling campaign. but this is the way that they do it. i watched the last one with mccain and obama. and previous to that, bush and doogore. it is amazing to watch. beckham stop in the midst of such attention and have a -- they can stop in the midst of such tension and show a sense of humor. as a lot of fun. and in the american tradition, it is for a great cause.

anything other than governor romney failed on that answer. >> now, both -- to both chris and mark, we look at where they are today. and clearly ohio and virginia, those are the important state right now. mark, first to you, the battleground as you now see it post-debate, shaping up in this next three weeks? >> it's great fun to play with the map and pretend we live in a country with 50 states but, in fact, we've been down to a nine state election now down to a two state election. the president has had a big advantage in the electoral college and governor romney still needs to overcome that. all nine states the president won four years ago. if governor romney is able to win virginia, florida and north carolina, virginia the toughest of the three, then he's in a stronger position, but then it hinges on ohio. i think the president -- governor romney basically has to win those four states. if he does, if he wins the three southern battle xwroundss, virginia, north carolina and florida and finds a way to win ohio he is in a commanding position. he needs to win one of the remaining five states i

in new york tonight. tell us how both sides have been getting ready. >> well, for mr. romney he has spent a tremendous amount of time on a mock stage set up just as it will be tomorrow night at hofstra university. his aides have been working on body language, encouraging him to lean in and answering questions. body language look like a retreat don't back away. encouraging him to use the opportunity to show he can connect to voters. that's one of the criticisms to mr. romney. both of these candidates are very familiar with the town hall format, it's just that they haven't been doing it with their opponents sitting on stage waiting for the follow-up. mr. obama will be taking questions from the audience. he too will try to elm if a pa theisman and try to turn it around and use it on the president. the speed in which he does the pivot could determine whether he wins on style points let alone substance. >> shepard: interesting. both camps preeminent strike on candy crowley. >> she says she will allow a facilitation process. questions she will will have chosen herself in advance and that if the
