and wisconsin are the states the obama campaign sees as its election day firewall because winning them means they could lose every other key swing state. all of them. and if they won those three midwestern states they'd be sitting at 271 electoral votes. new polls in two of those states today showed little movement from a month ago. an eight-point advantage. the president led by eight points a month ago n. wisconsin we have it as a six-point contest. the romney campaign insists the contest is much closer than our poll shows. the x-factor may very well be early voting. 34% of likely voters say they have cast their ballots and the president is winning those 67% to 32%. among election day voters romney ahead. now republicans pointed out that 285 ohio early and absentee ballots have been received in iowa which is only 19% of the 2008 electorate in the state, less than 34% in our poll. 363,000 have been requested in the state, 38% of the 2008 electorate. closer to our 34%. a little transparency. voter models overstating early voters or are democrats more apt to say they pressured early? it is mak

points in the 12 battleground states. 50-46. the gender gap among women was gone, obama leading by 49% to 48. most polls show obama leadingly more in the battleground states with a bigger lead among women. >> that was a couple weeks ago when that field work was done so that's ancient history. things change week-to-week. nationally now, in the large sample poll, obama has a 7-point lead among women, down from '08 but nevertheless he's maintaining his strength among women proportionately. his bigger problem, obama's, is he's lost more among men. >> the obama camp not surprisingly is pushing back hard saying your polls are, quote, way out of line and have deep flaws. how do you respond to the obama campaign? >> well that's not unusual, going back to dr. gallup who founded our company in 1936, he found heated commentary from either side on polls and we found it in the six election cycles. people come at you if they don't like the results. we don't have deep flaws, we're transparent with a team of methodologists and ask scientists. we just added more cell phones to take into the account th

can see the red on the key, romney, blue is obama. the yellow states are toss up states within the margin of error. this is the first time based on polls from within the last two weeks. we've been doing it over the last month, but since we are within this time frame, and there are so many polls, carl, this is within the last two weeks. what has changed? >> well, who says debates don't matter? there were 60 polls in the last week and 27 states. if you look at the 30 day map, there were three status changes, all of them benefitting romney. montana went from lean romney to strong romney. new hampshire and nevada moved from lean obama to toss up, but if you get rid of the polls that were conducted in the alert part of september and only look at the last two weeks, it accelerates the change. there are four more status changes, all of them benefitting romney for a total of seven status changes. the critical battleground state of ohio along with wisconsin go from lean obama to toss up, and connecticut goes from obama to lean obama and significantly, north carolina goes from toss up to

. >> if we come down to the small states, obama has to win two out of four. romney has to win three out of four to get there. that makes it tight. look, here's what the real change that's going on these days. that is north carolina and the tar heel state and the cheese head state are switching positions here. north carolina looks like it may be going a little bit toward romney and it was a battleground state only a month ago. wisconsin now which was a blue state is now a battleground state. you could say the dividing line is between north carolina and wisconsin. and that's illustrated in the new spending on tv. in this country. by both campaigns. north carolina was -- has been consistently, over the summer, one of the top ten sets of media markets in the country. wisconsin was left entirely out. so now north carolina is not really getting a lot of tv and all of a sudden, here comes wisconsin. if you add that to ohio, florida, colorado and virginia, this is where the action is. that's where the action is. >> that's whe

to the 270 electoral votes? >> the guaranteed states that obama get west side big electoral counts, versus the guaranteed states of mitt romney, are larger, the president has new york in his column, he's got in his column guaranteed. mitt romney has texas, mitt romney has georgia and not much else in terms of big electoral votes which is why florida is so important for the republican candidate, always at least going back to 2000 when we first started to see it as a red state-blue state kind of divide. >> let's take a look at another state, and that's nevada, obama is leading, is this the latino vote factor that we have heard so much about? >> the president's going to win latinos outside of florida by a pretty healthy margin, the question is by how much, the other question we're going to need to answer and we won't know until after election. is the president's supporters going to show up to vote? they could be boosting him in nevada, but the other thing going on in nevada on the ground, which is unlike all of the other battleground states is the democrats have managed to -- the romney campa

? imagine if obama care was repealed, you would have dynamic growth not only in florida and in other states. >> since the second debate, president obama is pushing hard on the issue of trust, he said voters shouldn't believe governor romney because he's shifting positions and he came up with a term for it romnesia. >> if you keep refusing to say whether or not you'll sign a bill to protect equal pay for equal work, you might have romnesia. if you let your employer deny you contra september tif care, you might have a case of rom romnesia. >> your response? >> that fires up his base. for the rest of americans who are trying to make up their vote, that's very cute, mr. president, but what are you going to do for the future? what is your plan for growing the economy? my kid is graduating college they may ask him, he can't find a job, what is your plan? where is the president's plan to save medicare? where is the president's plan on taxes and energy? why isn't he talking about those things? >> to follow-up, does governor romney support the fair pay act or not? >> i one that anyone who's working

electoral map, but the way i narrow is down is this. there's four obama states starting to lean towards romney. he really needs them and let's say he gets them. that's north carolina, florida, colorado and virginia. that puts him at 257. at that point to win the election there are two paths for mitt romney, and these are the fooift states to pay attention to. the first path is to win the state of ohio. he's your next president, but he's not doing that well in ohio. let's say he loses ohio. here's the next path. wisconsin may be more winnable at this point for the romney campaign than ohio is. we went over the reasons yesterday. if you win wisconsin all you need from romney is one of three states, new hampshire, iowa, or nevada. when wisconsin plus one of those, you're also over 270. those are the path i'm looking at. >> wisconsin is historically democratic. >> in 2000 and 2004 the margin was less than one point. the swing was one of the biggest in the country, which means there are more votes up for grabs potentially to come back to the republican fold for mitt romney. that state swung
