guy starts saying stuff and an f.b.i. guy gets in touch with them and the agent met him and the guy believed the f.b.i. agent was not an file agent but an accomplice and got the stuff together and the suspect and the fbi at plans a fake attack for months and this morning it went down. now the details of how it went down. rick? rick: the suspect is from bangladesh who travels to the united states in john for the purpose of carrying out a terrorist attack allegedly wanted to destroy america. what he did was go online to try and recruit others to form a cell and one of the people he recruited was an undercover f.b.i. agent who this suspect thought was someone who also wanted to commit a terrorist act and the f.b.i. agent supplied this man with 20, 50-pound bags of what was supposed to be explosive material and this morning they put the 1,000 pounds of material in a van and drove together to lower manhattan and parked outside the new york federal reserve bank on liberty street where this suspect allegedly believed he was about do blow up a 1,000-pound bomb. he had a debt naturor he work

phone but it was all part of a trap via an undercover f.b.i. agent who was to have provided the materials. the unidentified suspect caught the f.b.i.'s attention after posting something about jihad online. the agent in question made contact with this guy three months ago and has been tracking and working with him each day. the suspect reportedly telling him that he wanted to blow up a bank. now, reports are he wanted to go after president obama. no one is sure, but, today was on be the day, this morning, parking that van, and hurrying over to the hotel near the world trade center where he then tried to trigger the explosion on his cell phone. nothing happened and the terrorist was arrested and the thousand-pound bomb was a fake. so were we don't know. this were we know: lower manhattan. terror. jihad. ring a bell? it does to my next guest. with us now is former f.b.i. agent. bill, wow. >>guest: wow and certainly very sobering here in the context of what happened in libya and certainly during the season of campaign for the presidency. it shows you that even if this is a self-

those contacts were undercover agents with the fbi. wnbc's jonathan dienst is the chief investigative reporter and has the latest for us. jonathan. >> reporter: almost 24 hours after his arrest mohammed nafis remains behind bars without bail on the terror conspiracy counts, investigators say he tried to drive that van here to the federal reserve bank in lower manhattan and tried to set off a 1,000-pound bomb by remote control. but all along fbi, nypd and homeland security officials say they were on to him monitoring his every move and even provided through informants, some of the components for the bomb that were inert and that's why this part did not work, they say. they arrested him earlier this morning after they say he made a jihadist video claiming al qaeda had won, then he apparently left the van and went and tried to set off that explosion. investigators say they are looking into other soeblts, other people he was in contact with here in new york, in missouri where he went to school and also out in san diego. they say he had been trying to recruit others to join him in this ter
