is making a big statement out of nothing. one statement said, four years ago, the candidate obama said the following if you don't have a record to run on, you paint your opponent as somebody people should run away from. it goes on to say with nothing to run on, barack obama has become the type of candidate he once decried. our conservatives say the president is seeming small running on some of these things. >> yeah, and the other sound there, we showed the vice president, he is very quick on his feet. the baby started to cry. he used it in his speech. >> going after the baby vote, don, thank you very much, we appreciate it. >> you know it is not just the candidates talking, there are also newspapers making their picks. "the denver post" throwing their weight around president obama. writing, he is a steady leader who keeps the voters in mind." the comments on 47% of americans who refuse to take personal responsibility and care for their lives were a telling insight into his views and a low point of the campaign. another interesting endorsement for the president. this is unusual, since m

it worked. host: i was going to ask charles if he has thought about what obama has come over the last four years. the attorney general was questioned. he was questioned with lies. you have not said anything about his lies and the attorney general. what is going on with the thought? guest: the botched gun run into mexico is a fascinating issue. literally people have died and been killed with these guns moved across the border in hopes of tracking down these gunrunners. host: operation fast and furious. guest: the investigation -- it has been a disaster. it is up to the department of justice to make sure the investigations did not get to the bottom of it. i have always been skeptical about how much -- i think it enrages the already enraged. i do not think it is an issue that will unify people further on the left to be against president obama, certainly not to the degree the economy does. if you do not have a job or your neighbor does not, that is a unifying issue, unlike cost and furious. host: let's listen to more comments. this is a conversation last week. they talk to robin nation's debt

is he incentive to the four murders in america. i disagree. i think mr. obama was playing off mr. stewart's description and the remark was in context. however, there is a strange detachment in play here. from the very beginning, president obama was not fully engaged. after he he learned of the assassinations, he went to vegas to campaign. we now know the cia told the obama administration early on what happened in benghazi was an organized terror attack. yet the president would not hold a press conference and say that. instead, as u.n. ambassador and his press spokesperson openly mislead the public. why? it makes no sense. and even now mr. obama remains nebulous, foggy about the entire situation. so here's the deal. hold the press conference, mr. president. lay everything out there. if mr. obama fails to do that over the weekend, mitt romney has a huge opportunity with the foreign policy debate coming up on monday. we need answers. romney should demand them. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight. new polling after the second debate. gallup now has romney beating the p

that, because this is the same paper that endorsed barack obama four years ago, and for mitt romney to take that away from the president is important. a clip from the editorial i can read to you. we have little confidence that obama would be more successful managing the economy and the budget for the next four years and for that reason, we endorsed him in 2008. we're recommending romney in this race. that is a pretty significant development in this race, because that central part of florida, wolf, as you have been saying, we've all been saying for months now, very key to the outcome of the state of florida. now, having said all of that, as flora just mentioned a few moments ago, the president is on safe ground in wisconsin, iowa, and two other battleground states. >> we'll see how safe that ground is a lot could change. a big debate coming up monday night as all of us know and heading out on the campaign trail from new york. tomorrow, all practicing getting ready for the debate. tomorrow night, the very latest on the presidential election, right here on piers morgan tonight. piers w

. >> be that as it may, they all agreed that obama was back and failed to lay out the economic policy for four years. was it mission accomplished or missed opportunity? >> no. i think he didn't do enough of that. i think he did a better job of trying to say with sometimes with mitt romney's help as in the auto industry exchange, did a better job of explaining what good features of his record there are. and the auto industry's prime among them and mitt romney set him up for that but the president still hasn't said what new and different and better ideas he has for a second term. would do a better job or build on the momentum of the first. instead he spent most of his time raising questiing fears anf mitt romney and saying mitt romney will take us backwards and so forth. the president hasn't done a good enough job of making a positive case and that's the reason he is in the fight of his life right now. >> all right. howard fineman, see you next week i hope. thank you for joining us. >>> up next, the most important moments last night. we roll on for wednesday, october 17th. remember when you said men a

after 9:00 a.m. eastern we will see a spirited defense by barack obama of his four-year record or we won't. if we see it, this election campaign will take a strong new life. if we don't, something historic will begin to die. obama has much to say in his defense. he inherited the economic carnage of a recent republican president, a catastrophic loss of jobs, a collapse in the u.s. stock market, the death rattle of the auto industry. he, barack obama, then brought a financial and economic collapse back from the brink, changed the course of the economy from job destruction to job creation, doubled the american stock market, saved the auto industry. he did it all with a dramatic change of policy, a stimulus program that varied 180 degrees from the austerity measures that have humbled europe. an intervention into the auto industry that reinvigorated an industry that means pride to americans. obama needs to make this defense, he needs to underline the fact that his opponent and his party fought him every inch of the way. on the stimulus, on the auto industry, on health care, on equal pay for w

. obama had five times more drone strikes than bush ordered in his eight years as president, four times more deaths, something we don't discuss a lot, a huge part of the president's counter terrorism operations and i wonder if it will come up at the debate on monday and how he responds. unfortunately, we have to go to break. after we come back, we will discuss the fact that team romney is jumping off the swing set in north carolina. battlegrounds and democratics next on "now." bob... oh, hey alex. just picking up some, brochures, posters copies of my acceptance speech. great! it's always good to have a backup plan, in case i get hit by a meteor. wow, your hair looks great. didn't realize they did photoshop here. hey, good call on those mugs. can't let 'em see what you're drinking. you know, i'm glad we're both running a nice, clean race. no need to get nasty. here's your "honk if you had an affair with taylor" yard sign. looks good. 's a new quinnipiac poll that shows what was a 12 point lead for obama, now it's only four. some tightening there. so if the romney campaign is trying to pull some resources from pennsylvania to places like ohio and virginia, doesn't it stand to reason here it could be even closer in ohio, though? >> i don't think it is. show me the evidence. the fact is that ohioans have been for and with this president. and you talk about the auto industry being a regional issue. but we believe about 80 of 88 counties are in some way involved in the supply chain that enables these auto plants to really function. and that's what's important about this auto industry rescue. it has a broad sweep across all of ohio and michigan and indiana, but ohio particularly has benefitted from the auto have i and mitt romney said let this industry go bankrupt. and the president in the face of criticism stood up, did the right thing, the courageous thing and ohio is benefiting as a result and ohioans won't forget that. p. >> ohio, ohio, ohio. former governor ted strickland from that great state of ohio, thank you so much

it home, the simple argument of why would a voter think that the next four years, president obama will make washington work together? why will he be able to work with republicans the next four years? i think it has an initive appeal. tavi the article about bill and hillary clinton, as you know, we have been talking about poverty and we have discussed this together. i have been troubled by the fact that in the first two debates, i was told they did a much better job than jim lehrer did. respectfully. but no question about poverty. the numbers are very clear. it is threatening our very democracy. you know the story line as well as i do, but no moderator has asked the question directly about poverty and the poor. tomorrow night, might we get a question about that specifically from someone that is living in impoverished conditions? >> is a way tok there downplay poverty, but the one thing i will say is that he did a great job. that debate was 70 minutes on foreign policy. if you match that with most americans, if that is not whose last three of their concerns, we have not talked about

for obama four years ago, he "forgot" them and didn't keep his promises. in addition to ads, the candidates took another route to reaching some 50 million hispanics through interviews with the spanish-language network univision. immigration was one of the front and center issues. romney says he wouldn't deport the dreamers-- those young people who came to the u.s. before they turned 16 illegally- - and after an obama administration ruling this past summer, no longer face deportation provided they register with the federal government. >> i'm not going to be rounding people up and deporting them from the country. we're going to put in place a permanent solution. and unlike the president, when i'm president, i will actually do what i promise. i will put in place an immigration reform plan that solves this issue. >> suarez: and mr. obama says, despite the dream act changes, immigration is one of the greatest failures of his first term. >> and so i am happy to take responsibility for the fact that we didn't get it done. what i promised was that i would work every single day as hard as i can to m

telling an audience why they should not vote for the president. >> president obama four years ago when he was running for president said if he had no fresh ideas, use stale tactics to scare voters. if you don't have a record to run on, paint your opponent as someone people should run from. make a big election about small things. that's what he said when he ran for president four years ago. that's exactly what he has become now that he is president, and he has no record to run on. >> vice president biden took the campaign to the swing state of florida where he didn't miss a beat after his speech got an unexpected interruption. >> they decimate education. they -- like that beautiful baby over there. i don't blame them for crying. i don't blame that baby for crying. that baby -- that baby -- that baby knows what's in store for him or her if romney wins. >> but it wasn't all laughs. biden also took romney to task over his investment record and used the president's new line romnesia. >>> all eyes are on boca raton, florida, where president obama and mitt romney will face off tomorrow. romney s

four years ago, president obama was mentioning something that might come back to haunt him tonight. listen to this. >> we are now looking at a deficit of well over half a trillion so one of the things i think we have to recognize is pursuing the sail kind of policies we pursue the last eight years will not bring the deficit and senator john mccain voted for four out of five of president bush's budgets. we have to take this in a new direction. that is what i proposal. >>neil: that was then $5 trillion more in debt now, same venue, four years apart. how does one mitt romney play to tonight? how does president obama handle and defend where and what he said back then tonight? we are joined by our guest. we do not lose the tape, that is the thing. we hang on to the tapes. what do you think? >>guest: that is right. president obama, back when he was a candidate had the advantage of being the candidate from the other party out of power and could run as a change candidate at a time of economic turmoil which is what he was doing saying look what your party d i will be the change. now, four y

ready for his town hall against obama four years ago. why is the audience so key? what does that get governor romney? >> because when people see that, then they know he cares. they know it's not just about policy, it's not just about position, it is about the people. >> reporter: gop sources say that is especially important for romney, working hard to shed an out of touch image. they want romney to avoid awkward missteps, like this, when george hw bush could not answer how the recession affected him. >> on a personal basis, how has it affected you? >> has it affected you personally? >> i'm sure it has, i love my grandchildren -- >> how? >> help me with the question and i'll try to answer. >> reporter: romney's old debate coach reviewed with us the first face-off with obama, his best and worst moments. best, his closing statement. >> what kind of america do you want to have for yourself and for your children? >> that's very effective. he stole the president's vocabulary. they had been using the language of the two paths. >> reporter: worst? this fumble. >> neither the president nor i

romney. four years ago they endorsed president obama, and in a very impressive editorial, which i'm posting on gretawire.com, and they've outed why they no longer have confidence in president obama. how significant is that endorsements, or is it? >> i don't think newspaper endorsements mean much of anything anymore, but that's a leftest newspaper. they've always endorsed democrats. they may have switched editors or something. i think romney will win florida, win most states. >> greta: now to the gallup poll, seven points. that's the national one. not talking about the swing states, which is where this will be decided. explain whether or not that seven points really is as powerful as some might think. >> oh, yeah, it is. what gallup did, they switched from polling all voters to polling likely voters as the election neared. that gives a more realistic view of what will happen. what's going on now is that obama based his entire campaign, his entire spring and summer and fall on discrediting romney, saying whatever you think of the economy, whatever you think about the future, whateve

that the gap is now about four-point advantage for president obama in a state, pennsylvania, that he's absolutely counting on. there's another poll showing them dead even in new hampshire. a gallup poll that the obama camp is discounting but that also shows a big narrowing among women. >> yeah. >> that's been the firewall all along for president obama. what's going on here? >> well, look andrea, i think we are still in many ways feeling the impact of the debate 13 days ago. while people like you and i are kind of instantly analyzing what happens it takes time for people to kind of seep into the culture, for people to process it and come out of watching it or reading the coverage of it with an opinion. so i think the tightening in pennsylvania, there's tightening in ohio, florida, there's polls that show mitt romney ahead. you mentioned new hampshire. polling in colorado, virginia. what we're seeing broadly is what we've seen in states at the national level. barack obama mid to high single digit lead at the national level is a tie. i think in most battle ground states he's lost a few

important in ohio and there is such an edge for president obama four years ago there. he still has an edge in ohio. the republicans are making serious in roads there. is that a concern to you? and how much of an edge do you have to have? >> i don't know that the republicans are making big in roads. the president won 51-47. i think it will end up sort of in that area again this year. and i will settle for that. i see no evidence that the republicans are making any significant gains in these last days. the nbc poll last week i believe it was 51-45. the president has been recently over 50%. that is what really counts. once you get 50% you will win the election. >> let me play a chunk of what the president said to john stewart yesterday about libya. >> we weren't confused about the fact that four americans had been killed. i wasn't confused about the fact that we needed to ramp up diplomatic security. >> you have to admit it wasn't the optimal response to the american people. >> here is what i will say. if four americans get killed it is not optimal. >> the president has been getting a lot of

will be $20 trillion in four years. >> president obama could not answer -- when he asked the question, have you checked your pension? he didn't answer that. he didn't talk about the deficit. he didn't make mention to how he was going to specifically lower the deficit. >> this has been -- this has popped up. they clearly believe this is a weak point for the president. >> look, what i think the president talked about is a balanced plan. as he talked about last night, we're going to have to make some tough spending cuts. we're going to need to ask mitt romney and others, including barack obama, to pay their fair share, to pay a little bit more. certainly the president talked about taxpayers and do this in a way to allow us to invest in important things, like education and things that we know will grow our economy. mitt romney wants to start the deficit conversation with $5 trillion new romney tax cut and a defense spending cut that the pentagon doesn't want. higher taxes on the middle class and drastic cut to the important investments. >> i want to shift to libya here. here was the president o

the then senator obama four years ago and also this is florida. does it surprise you? >> doesn't surprise me particularly, but, i mean, we're going to see a lot of these kinds of endorsements and you notice that the "orlando sentinel" also said and if he doesn't produce in four years, we're happy to look for another candidate. it doesn't surprise me particularly. it does help a candidate when they seem to be on a roll or it helps maybe stop the bleeding if a candidate begins to lose a state. it makes people look more. by and large i think you're looking at a voting population that mostly has made up its mind and right now it's about getting your people who are going to vote for you enthusiastic enough to show up on election day or fill out those absentee ballots or go to early voting. >> what about north carolina? i was reading my news observer today. and they talk about how the romney campaign, their word is beginning to feel confident enough about north carolina, they're beginning to shift out of state. apparently the chief romney spokesman in north carolina is now headed to ohio. so are w

willing to give obama four more years. so many people have not been paying attention. i think people need to research, called back and listen to the topics of what these candidates are talking about. a caller was talking about oil. all the prices do need to go up. people are not researching. romney is flip-floping so much. he says what you want to hear. when you go back, he does not believe a lot of these issues. i think mccain would have been a better candidate. guest: interesting call. voters want to be informed. it is really hard. this caller has done and other research -- has done a lot of research. i think the super pacs and the money in politics is not adding to the knowledge the voter gets. it is adding to the confusion. host: some newspapers have been doing series comparing the candidates on the issues. you can compare them on a certain issue, most of the newspapers are doing that. guest: and even some local one. host: i want to read this e- mail. guest: she is my kind of gal. host: can you speak to that tie? andt: i'm close to her age i think the baby boomer women do feel close t

, governor romney held president obama for every single one. his failures overs last five-on-four years, by far the single best indictment president obama has faced yet. the media should learn from this. here some of the highlights. >> we just can't afford four more years like the last four years. he said that by now we'd have unemployment at 5.4%. the difference between where it is and 5.4% is 9 million americans without work. i wasn't the one that said 5.4%. this was the president's plan. didn't get there. he said he would have by now put forward a plan to reform medicare and social security, because he pointed out they're on the road to bankruptcy. he would reform them, get that done. he hasn't even made a proposal on either one. he said in his first year he'd immigration income families would have a reduction in their health insurance premiums by $2,500 a year. it's gone by up by $2,500 a year. 5 million jobs. jobs. the entire record is such that the unemployment has not been reduced in this country. the unemployment, the number of people who are still looking for work, is still 23

in sales. i have 12,000 employees. we were growing 20% to year. ere four years later under the obama administration we are doing half the amount of sales of we were doing. we had to cut our force from 12,000 to 5,000, and we are growing 0% a year verses that 20 percent before. i have lived through this last four years. i can be a monday morning quarterback and predict what the next four years under president obama will be like to my and i wanted to tell my employees exactly what to expect if, in fact, they re-elect president obama. lou: there is nothing academic about an election, as of politicians sm to be confidence and insistence upon saying, if they win the elections, elections have consequences, but those elections have brought consequences that are t often discussed in the business community. markey will come a billionaire in his own right said he treated this, suggestin how your employees should vote is exactly to create problems among workers and to reduce productivity. you know, you weren't telling your employees at all how to work, but what is your reaction -- how to vote.

the last four years in the obama economy with higher taxes, higher unemployment and record leveling of poverty, end quote. all the back and forthcoming with the third and final presidential debate on monday, and with new polling showing the race is a nail-biter. it's mark murray. when we look at the numbers here, we have new numbers from our nbc news poll here, and when we look at wisconsin as well as iowa, some interesting numbers here. obama ahead, but when we look at what the gallup numbers are, it gives romney a six-point lead. how do these two come together? >> richard, i think the polling is all over the place right now. i think that signals a very tight and competitive race, and sometimes when you actually see such a really close race that we're all expecting for november 6th, you're going to have

, versus the failed policies that we've seen over these past four years from president obama, our campaign has done very well here. and we feel very good about where we're positioned here right now. >> well, i agree with kevin that it is very close. you know, some polls have the president five up, some have the-- some polls have the governor five up. but we've invested in this state. we have more than 100 campaign offices across this state. we believe in our ground operations. we've closed the gap-- normally republicans have an advantage with absentee ballots. in florida, we've close closed that gap in this election in terms of the academy going forwardof agenda, we have made progress here in florida. the housing industry is on the rebound. we created jobs in florida, we created new energy, the solar and wind energy, because of the investments the president has made. i think people in florida agree with most people across this country, they want to build this economy, rebuild this economy in a way meant to last which means you center to do this from middle out with a strong middle class an

record. what i didn't really get a sense of, what is the vision of four more years of obama? we had hope and change. the hope didn't really materialize and there wasn't a grey great deal of change. >> i mean, that's where i actually disagree. there was a lot of hope i've had that's been delivered upon. from issues of equity, the lilly ledbetter law. i hope people get equal work and equal pay. gays in military. on economic issues, i'm in a city that when the country's in a recession, urban areas are in a depression. programs working with obama from the stimulus, you name it, we're in a period of creating thousands of jobs, over 5,000 jobs created in newark, hope my city hasn't seen before. when it comes to small businesses, i saw this, clearly. in fact, as i stump around the country, i see people in flint, michigan, spa, other programs president obama dwint just cut taxes but gave us capital at a time we desperately needed it. >> 23 million americans unemployment and a $16 trillion debt. these are two huge stakes mitt romney can keep way fort next -- >> but there is a level of hypocrisy.

, there was a possibility that i think obama was ahead by about four points nationally and there was a pobltd with a really strong debate performance there by obama that would have set the conservative panic to the critical mass. at that point what would have come into play was the house. i was getting ready to write that maybe the democrats can rin the house after all column around that point. i think now we're at the point where yeah, obama is still decently positioned to win this thing, the idea having the house and having one party control gone, that's probably off the table now. >> some senate races are going well for democrats where they didn't expect it. >> yeah, still looking strong for the senate. i think virginia will be one that as goes the presidential race so goes the senate. overall it looks like democrats have a good chance to hold the senate. >> do you know why president obama underperformed according to some people in the first debate? >> this guy right here. he should have been in debate prep. he should have been directing the reaction shot. >> yes. i mean, gore was with that and the sigh

with the american people. the american people given barack obama four years. they have given him more than enough time to turn around. in obama's own words said if i don't do this in 3 1/2, four years this will be a one-term proposition. the argument, well i just need a little bit more time, we're on the right path, i don't think most of the american people are buying that. they have seen other presidents turn really grave economic situations around in the space of four years. this president has not only done that, martha, but taken a bad situation and made it worse. martha: we'll definitely get to foreign policy we will hear, we all expect, the benghazi questions. you know, i can imagine that mitt romney might deal with that by talking a little bit about what he would have done in the same position. that he would have probably gone to the intel brief the next morning. that he might have canceled his trip to las vegas. how do you see all of that being approached, kirsten? >> well, i mean, he has to be careful because i think you've seen how the media has treated this issue, which is they treat th

, part of the obama strategy four years ago and part of the strategy again this time is to literally change the face of the electorate. it was blacker, it was browner, it was younger, and you're going to see that again. and i'll tell you one of the things, and i think we will hear something about this 47% comment tonight, because part of the reason that was so devastating for mitt romney was that low income white voters were saying, wait a second, that's us. and so -- and they started to understand what those -- that kind of stereotyping language, the kind of effect that had. wait a second, that's not who we are, that's not our experience. we're hard working people, we're not victims. that was having such an impact on romney, that's why when he went on fax last time he was ready with his answer to try to walk that back because he realized he was not just catering with those sort of dog whistles about welfare, not just sort of speaking to parts of the base, but he was then also offending parts of his base. so i think that's part of what romney is going to have to deal with tonight whe
