This collection is of sound recordings forming part of the London Sound Survey website,which went online at the end of May, 2009.

The site's first aim is to make and collect field recordings, and so build a comprehensive auditory account of London life in the early 21st century. There is also a database of written accounts comprising a history of London sounds by authors as far back as the 11th century.

London Sound Survey sorts its field recordings into three main categories.

Sound action recordings are of sounds, mostly vocalisations, which are designed to affect people's behaviour. They may be for economic, religious, political or social ends. They include recordings of events where there is a common focus of attention, as well as nonverbal signals such as warning sirens, fireworks and church bells.

Sound map recordings are those where the location of the recording is the point of interest. They are generally of incidental sounds, or of auditory scenes where there is no single focus of attention, and are subdivided into day-time and night-time recordings.

Wildlife recordings are of the calls and songs of wild animals found within London. Most so far are of birds, and these are subdivided into land and water species. Other sections exist for dawn choruses, and mammals and other animals.
